The 2003 Jonathan Blake Waxler Award for Social Justice awarded to Kelly DeSonza of New Bedford

The annual Jonathan Waxler Memorial Prize for Social Justice was presented to Kelly DeSouza of New Bedford, a senior Humanities/Social Science major at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

DeSouza won the $500 prize in recognition of her principled commitment to social activism both oncampus and off, according to the award committee chaired by Prof. Richard Larschan. She plans to give the money to charity.

The award was established in 1995 through the generosity of friends and colleagues of UMass Dartmouth Professor Robert Waxler and his wife Linda Waxler to honor the memory of their beloved son Jonathan. Jonathan Waxler helped organize community groups, worked with labor unions, campaigned for educational and social issues, taught a course at UMass Amherst on labor history, and in general sought tirelessly to improve the lives of people less fortunate than himself.

DeSouza, who has a 3.65 grade point average, contributes to the greater good as an organizer of food and clothing drives for the Market Ministry Homeless Shelter, an active member of the Jibreel Khazan Day Committee promoting multicultural education in New Bedford, a participant in the Peace and Social Concerns Committee at Allen,s Neck Meeting House providing aid to Afghanistan, a volunteer with the Junior Achievement Reading Program at Highland Elementary School in Fall River, and a tutor of inmates at the New Bedford county jail.

"Kelly clearly embodies Jonathan's faith in the democratic process and the virtue of working with others to achieve the goals of a democratic community. For all these reasons, then, the entire UMass Dartmouth community signals its great pride in Kelly DeSouza's accomplishments by awarding her the 2003 Jonathan Blake Waxler Memorial Prize for Social Justice, " Larchan said.
