The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts, in conjunction with the Acushnet & Westport Public Schools, is proud to announce an exciting new summer camp called “Renaissance Kids.” This innovative summer program will introduce students to several aspects of the visual and performing arts.

The “Renaissance Kids” program will provide area children with an opportunity to become well-rounded artists, scholars and athletes. Students will be introduced to topics included in the Massachusetts Education Frameworks in fun and creative ways. These topics serve as the basis for the MCAS testing system.

Each “Renaissance Kids” program is a unique multi-arts summer camp for children between the ages of 7-12. In Westport, the program will operate at the Westport Elementary School from July 7 to July 25, 2003. The Acushnet “Renaissance Kids” program will operate at the Acushnet Elementary School from July 14 to August 1, 2003.

The “Renaissance Kids” summer camp uses the arts to engage students in many diverse disciplines such as, math, science and writing. All faculty members are either professional teacher/artists or graduate students in art education at UMass Dartmouth.

“Renaissance Kids” programs offer classes in a variety of diverse art forms including drama, dance, music, video production, visual arts and athletics. Students will be engaged in activities ranging from theater projects, and playwriting, to choreography, singing, drumming, animation and live-action original screenplays. Visual arts sessions will feature drawing, painting, sculpture and various other crafts. The athletic programs include a variety or games offered each week with a focus on team collaboration.

This is the first year of the program, and the enrollment period will remain open
through the last week of each program cycle. Parents may register their children for
one-week, two-week, or three-week sessions. A 10% discount will be available to the first (40) students that enroll for a full three-week session. There is also a 5% discount available for siblings.

The Acushnet and Westport superintendents and school boards endorsed and approved the “Renaissance Kids” program as a valuable addition to the school system. Any proceeds generated by the summer program will be available to the Acushnet and Westport Public Schools to fund arts-related programs during the upcoming school year.
