The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Feitelberg Insurance jointly announced the creation of the Feitelberg/Abraham Scholarship program at the Dartmouth campus to recognize Joseph H. Feitelberg and Anthony J. Abraham for their many years of leadership and community services.

More than 450 friends, contributors and well wishers attended a spectacular dinner celebration held aboard the Battleship Massachusetts in late June to “kick-off” the scholarship drive in honor of Messrs Feitelberg and Abraham. During the speaking program, it was announced that $40,000 was being donated to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to establish the new Feitelberg/Abraham Scholarship fund.

“It’s an honor for the University to recognize Joe Feitelberg and Tony Abraham in this very special way,” said UMD Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack. “As business leaders, Joe and Tony set the standard for giving something back to the community. This scholarship is testimony to their personal commitment to the importance of education in transforming an entire region,” she said.

This need-based scholarship fund will be available to support sophomore, junior or senior students enrolled at the Charlton College of Business. To be eligible for consideration, students must be residents of Fall River, Somerset or Westport, the three towns in which Messrs. Feitelberg and Abraham have resided and worked throughout their lives.

The fund was created through a combination of individual and corporate donations. Among the leading contributors are Beacon Mutual, Claremont Corp., Arbella Insurance Group, Acadia Insurance Co., Citizens-Union Savings Bank, Travelers/Premier Insurance, Borden & Remington Corp., Citizens Bank, Jim and Bob Karam, K.R. Rezendes, Inc., Meyer, Regan & Wilner, LLP, Partridge Snow & Hahn, LLP, Rhode Island Distributing, Safety Insurance, St. Anne's Hospital, Waring-Sullivan Affiliated Family Funeral Homes and Lafrance Hospitality Company.

"Joe and Tony touched the lives of literally hundreds of insurance professionals. These two industry leaders mentored, coached and served as role models for many, spanning generations of people in their profession,” said John J. Feitelberg, CEO & President of Feitelberg Insurance. “They are two gentlemen who were always committed to education and it is fitting that a scholarship at UMASS Dartmouth will serve to continue their legacy."

Beginning in 2004, students will apply for the Feitelberg/Abraham Scholarship through the University’s office of financial aid. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2004. The UMass Dartmouth Foundation will manage the scholarship fund.

Individuals seeking additional information or wishing to make a contribution to the Feitelberg/Abraham Scholarship fund can contact Donald Ramsbottom the Executive Director of the UMD Foundation at 508-999-8011.
