Dartmouth, Massachusetts- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s College of Visual and Performing Arts Star Store building in New Bedford has recently been recognized with The Boston Society of Architects' Citation Award in Higher Education Facilities Design and The AIA/SCUP Excellence in Planning Award for outstanding design.

The Boston Society of Architects' Citation Award was given for the college’s distinctive four vessels gallery and reception area. Urban Instruments, Inc. of Newton, Massachusetts, created a distinctive image for the College of Visual and Performing Arts, which had relocated to a historic building in downtown New Bedford. A collection of strategically placed sculptural objects was inserted into the space to accommodate reception and seating area. Since its establishment in 1867, the Boston Society of Architects has been a committed advocate of excellence in the built environment and increased service of the profession to society.

The Excellence in Planning Award was given as a result of a juried competition that recognizes state-of-the-art planning and emphasizes excellence in higher education environment and settings. The Excellence in Planning Award Program is a joint effort between the American Institute of Architecture and the Society for College and University Planning. The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), established in 1965, is the only nationally recognized association focused on the promotion, advancement, and application of effective planning in higher education. Award recipients must emphasize not only the quality of the physical environment, but also the comprehensive nature of the planning process. Significant emphasis is placed on the value of the planning by the institution, as demonstrated by its implementation process.
