DARTMOUTH, MA. – During the recently completed spring semester, a group of high-energy students at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth took a giant step forward and received official approval to organize an exciting new student dance team. The UMD Student Senate designated the dance team as an officially recognized student organization on the UMass Dartmouth campus

The idea of a dance team was conceived approximately one year ago by the team’s current tri-captains Angela Popoloski, Mai-Lis Hohmeister, and Heather Borgeson.

“We started with a small groups of girls near the end of the spring 2003 semester and went through a small tryout,” said dance team advisor Louise Boudreau. “At the beginning of this school year, we held tryouts again and had an astounding show interest from the students.”

Tryouts were held over two days and eventually 16 students were selected for the team. In addition to the tri-captains Popoloski (Arlington MA), Hohmeister (Bethlehem NH)and Berguson (Hanson MA), the dance team includes Beth Sturtevant (New Bedford MA), Katy Kampschneider (Omaha Nebraska), Heather Butler (Coventy RI), Jen Chase (Shirley MA), Alexis Demas (Canton MA), Jen Palmer (Worcester MA), Lauren Arduino (Franklin MA), Linda Nwachukwu (Randolph MA), Erin Donovan (Peabody MA), Jennifer McDaniel (Bellingham MA), Brianna Antle (Kingston MA), and Kate Carrabba (Port Charlotte FL).

In its first year, the dance team held a variety of fundraisers to offset the cost of uniforms and performances. It also helped the University’s pre-school program with their chocolate fundraiser to purchase new equipment for their school and playground.

Major performances included the HASA (Haitian American Student Association ) talent show and several halftime shows at the UMass Dartmouth basketball games, and at the Bryant College Invitational dance team exhibition. The dance team also performed at the Pan African Dance Groups show and at the “Relay for Life” event held at the Dartmouth campus. The season’s highlight was a second place finish at the 2004 University of Rhode Island dance competition where we took second place out of 25 teams.

Tryouts for the 2004-2005 dance team are scheduled to begin in early September when classes resume. Anyone interested in obtaining additional information about the dance team can contact Louise Boudreau via telephone at 508-999-8052 or by email at UMD_dance@yahoo.com
