15th Annual UMass Dartmouth Research Exhibition
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chapter of Sigma Xi will hold a two-day research exhibition by faculty and graduate/undergraduate students April 28th & 29th, 2009. The exhibition will follow the format of poster sessions at professional meetings and will be held on the first floor of the Library.
Information for participants
Faculty and students - both undergraduate and graduate- are cordially invited to participate in the exhibition. Faculty, students and staff involved in research activity are also encouraged to submit an abstract for presentation at the exposition.
The deadline for registration and abstract submission is Friday, April 17 at 11:00 pm. This year registration and abstract submission will be conducted entirely using the Sigma Xi web site. When you have completed your abstract, fill out the registration form. If you have any questions about the registration or abstract submission procedure, contact Professor Grant O'Rielly (Physics) or Ellizabeth Winiarz (Science Librarian). Space considerations limit the number of exhibitors to 90. In the event that the number of participants exceeds capacity, the Organizing Committee will consider earlier submissions first.
If you are not familiar with the style of poster sessions, you are welcome to consult any member of the Organizing Committee (listed below) for advice. Exhibitors will be expected to be present at their posters for two hours in the afternoon of both days with the posters remaining on display in the library the first afternoon and evening and throughout the second day. Abstracts for the poster presentations will be posted on the Sigma Xi web site and printed in a booklet that will be used to promote the exhibition and will also be distributed to presenters and attendees.
Three-part hinged display boards (approx. 30 x 60 inches) will be made available to the presenters for mounting text and figures. Please organize your display so that mounting can be done using tacks or binder clips, not tape that damages the display boards. Please indicate the need for an electrical outlet on the registration form.

Abstract Preparation And Submission Guidelines
- The abstract should describe the objectives, methods, and results of the research, and should be written for a non-specialist.
- The abstract, including title and authors' names, will be formatted to fit into a limited space. Because of this the text of the abstract must not exceed 1,180 characters including spaces. (Approximately 225 words). You should write the abstract in your word processor, then check its length. (With Microsoft Word choose "word count" from the "tools" menu. It will tell you the number of words, as well as the number of characters with spaces.)
Once satisfied that your abstract meets the length restrictions you can simply cut and paste it into the online form. Note: The form includes some duplicate information to ease the process of making the print publications, as well as keeping a record of who is participating.
