College Positive Program
Welcome to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College Positive Program
The College Positive Program at UMass Dartmouth is dedicated to helping local youth achieve the dream of a college education by assisting and advising students on the college-bound path. Our efforts are aimed at increasing college enrollment and success for all students by providing them with support and information about college preparation, paying for college, etc. UMass Dartmouth College Positive students volunteer as a part of a service program, representing higher education as they expose youths to college options, resources, and materials to be successful in college exploration.
Over the years, our program has achieved this goal through various means on and off campus. Our activities have ranged from providing college tours for middle school children to serving as assistants in guidance offices at local high schools. Workshops are held on Tuesdays or Thursdays at Durfee High School by UMass Dartmouth student advisors to closely guide the students through the college application process. During the 2012-2013 academic year, in addition to the workshops at Durfee, we hosted college tours, during the Spring semester, for the entire freshman class at New Bedford High School to expose them to the various aspects of college life, including visits to the dorms, the campus center, classrooms, and the Grand Reading Room.
The goal of College Positive is to help youth see college as an attainable option, and provide understanding of the process to get there.
The College Positive Program employs students who receive a Federal Work Study award or who would like to volunteer. Students must have sophomore standing or higher with strong academic skills and an interest in helping youths.
College Positive student advisors are responsible for attending mandatory training sessions and all workshops held at Durfee High School. College Positive tour guides must be comfortable speaking in front of a group of 10-15 students.
