Outreach


UMass Dartmouth is a powerful catalyst for economic, social and cultural development in our region and throughout the Commonwealth. The university invests millions of dollars in programs and facilities and thousands of volunteer hours in our surrounding communities. The university's $20 million research enterprise is focused on issues (marine science, bio-technology, public policy, math education, Portuguese culture, etc.) that are critical to the future of the region.

Building the economy

Office of Economic Development - This office links university knowledge and talent to community job creation efforts.

SouthCoast Development Partnership -The UMass-Dartmouth-managed SouthCoast Development Partnership was founded in 1999 as a regional collaborative to assist businesses looking to expand or relocate in the region.

Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center - This state-of-the-art facility, located in Fall River, connect university research and expertise to industry in order to create new jobs and new companies throughout the region.

Serving the community

Student community service -UMass Dartmouth students contribute thousands of hours of service to the surrounding community.

University centers - A variety of university centers focus research and education on the needs of the community.

Strengthening the social/cultural fabric

Downtown New Bedford arts campus -This state-of-the-art facility has enlivened "The Whaling City's" arts community and encouraged the redevelopment of at least a dozen other downtown buildings. It is home to hundreds of artists studios offering stunning views of the New Bedford Historical National Park and Atlantic Ocean, and the University Art Gallery.

Bank of America Freedom Festival -The university, in collaboration with lead sponsor Bank of America, hosts an annual family - friendly fireworks display and New Bedford Symphony Orchestra concert that attracts 20,000 people to the campus. 

SHARE Foundation
The Society for Human Advancement through Rehabilitation Engineering is a non-profit foundation that provides custom-designed assistive computer technology to people with disabilities.

SouthCoast Compeer
UMass Dartmouth-sponsored SouthCoast Compeer is a regional chapter of Compeer International which provides trained volunteer friends and mentors to persons with mental illness.

Hope Dialogue
Faculty, staff and students contribute to the ongoing dialogue about violence in the community through internships, research projects and service learning projects.

Conversations Across Communities
Join the Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Learning and Scholarship conversation about how the work of UMass Dartmouth is woven into our wider community.

Supporting the K-20 pipeline

SouthCoast Education Compact - The UMass Dartmouth-managed Compact is an education partnership of business leaders, area school superintendents, UMass, and Bristol Community College created to improve the educational attainment level in the SouthCoast region.

Center for University, School and Community Partnerships - CUSP provides high quality professional learning experiences for beginning and experienced K-12 teachers to strengthen their content knowledge, broaden their teaching practices and curricula, and build leadership skills necessary to improve schools and student achievement.

College Now
Alternative admissions program for students who need a non-traditional route into college.

START
An opportunity for students to sharpen basic math and science skills

Upward Bound
A college preparatory program for disadvantaged students attending New Bedford High School, Westport High School and Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.
