The SHRM Learning System is designed by instructional designers and certified human resource professionals to help participants achieve professional development goals with practical, "real-world" information within each of the functional areas of human resource management. It provides the most comprehensive and effective PHR/SPHR training program through a blended format of printed workbooks, learning software and Web-based study tools and serves as a reference of HR practices.

The SHRM Learning System is a professional development program is designed for two audiences:

  • Participants seeking continuing professional development and a broad overview of the field, and
  • Participants preparing to take the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification examinations administered by the HR Certification Institute.

The program uses the SHRM® Learning System which is updated with current HR policies and legislation. As a professional development tool, the Learning System can increase a participant's knowledge of the field of human resources and provide current reference of HR practices. As a certification preparation tool, the Learning System has a measurable track record of success for those qualified to sit for the exam.

This course is offered in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The course investment includes all course materials but does not cover registration for the PHR or SPHR examinations.

Cancellation policy: Before the first class meeting, all course charges will be refunded except a $30 non-refundable registration fee. Once class begins, NO Refunds will be permitted.

Program Requirements: There are no admission requirements to take this program, however certain criteria must be met for participants taking the PHR or SPHR exam. See exam requirements below.

PHR Exam Requirements:
1 year of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Master's degree or higher
2 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Bachelor's degree
4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with less than a Bachelor's degree

SPHR Exam Requirements:
4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Master's degree or higher
5 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Bachelor's degree
7 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with less than a Bachelor's degree

Course Content

The SHRM Learning System course features printed workbooks, over 1600 test questions, an online resource center and The SPHR Preparation Book, designed especially for SPHR candidates. The course covers:

Module 1: Strategic Business Management
Includes the role of human resources in organizations, the strategic planning process, scanning the external environment, organizational structure and internal HR partners, measuring human resources effectiveness, ethical issues affecting human resources, human resources and the legislative environment.

Module 2: Workforce Planning and Employment
Covers key legislation affecting employee rights, privacy and consumer protection, EEO/Affirmative Action, gender discrimination and harassment, organizational staffing requirements, job analysis and documentation, recruitment, flexible staffing and selection, employment practices, organizational exit, employee records management.

Module 3: Human Resource Development
Examines key legislation, human resource development and the organization, adult learning and motivation, assessment of HRD needs and the organization, career development, developing leaders, organizational development initiatives, performance management.

Module 4: Total Rewards
Includes key legislation, total compensation and the strategic focus of the organization, pay administration, compensation systems, introduction to benefit programs, government-mandated benefits, voluntary benefits, compensation and benefit programs for international employees, evaluating the total compensation system and communicating it to employees.

Module 5: Employee and Labor Relations
Cover key legislation affecting employee and labor relations, employee relations and organizational culture, employee involvement strategies, positive employee relations, work rules in union and nonunion environments, effective communication of laws, regulations, and organizational policies, discipline and formal complaint resolution, union organizing; unfair labor practices, collective bargaining, strikes and secondary boycotts, public-sector labor relations, international employee and labor relations.

Module 6: Risk Management
Examines key legislation, safety, health, security.
