The New Bedford Center for Professional and Continuing Education is an outreach facility of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Division of Professional & Continuing Education, which serves as the community's outreach and recruitment resource for Life-Long Learning. The Center serves the community through outreach and recruitment for adult and youth educational programs, job training and skills development opportunities. The facility, located in a central city location and accessible by public transportation, is an environmentally friendly atmosphere for all students, is responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities, and is a caring learning environment.

An introduction to the wider cultural and legal contexts of the criminal justice system. The course draws on the sociology of law and the police, as well as the functioning of the courts in order to understand the concept of law, the notion of the rule of law, due process, and the role of constraint in law enforcement in a democratic society. Mathematics learning comes to life in the original standards based classroom. Lessons taught will encourage practice in collecting and organizing data, measuring and scaling objects, patterning, counting, estimating and more. Hands-on creative and interdisciplinary approaches to connect language arts, math, and the arts will be presented. Teaching shapes, proportion, geometric shapes and patterns, connections, mathematical themes and designs are included. This course is designed to provide experienced teachers with the skills and knowledge base needed to address instructional issues in the classroom. Based on their diverse teaching and learning experiences, teachers ill work in their specific areas of the expertise and in their understanding of the teaching and learning process as part of an interdisciplinary, character and self esteem connection to the language arts, health, reading, the arts and the collaborative community. The connection will bridge the curriculum through hands-on student centered activities. Teachers will explore ways to integrate content for meaningful learning and will teach language arts and reading in all the content areas listed using the language arts, health, music, and the E.L.A. and Massachusetts Arts Framework as a basis for bridging curriculum. Approaches to the philosophy of law. The course addresses questions like, What gives meaning to law? How is the law interpreted, or how are judicial interpretations justified? What is the relationship between law and morality, or law and culture or custom? The course examines a number of state and Supreme Court opinions (on issues like free speech and expressive liberties, reproductive issues, obscenity, legal ethics, jury nullification, and hate crime legislation) with a critical eye toward their philosophical or juridical soundness. This course is valuable for those considering careers in law, public affairs or politics.
