Exploration of how culture and systems of social inequality shape health and health care practices in different societies around the world. The course examines cultural concepts of health, illness, and healing; the nature of the therapeutic encounter; and the impact of differences in wealth, race, gender on health and access to health care. A foundation course for all English majors, examining traditions and innovations in literature and in the study of literature in English. Students develop writing and research skills in the discipline and improve their knowledge of literary terms and forms, literary history and conventions, literary influence, and new and emerging forms and approaches. Genres studied include poetry, drama, fiction, and literary (creative) non-fiction. The course also examines key issues in the profession of literary studies, such as the development of departments of literature, canon formation, and the relationship of literary theory to literary practice.

Explores canonical and/or non-canonical literature from an historical perspective to strengthen background knowledge and understanding of literature, using representative literary texts as a point for departure and discussion. Includes discussion of issues relating the role of historical texts to alternative, non-traditional and multi-cultural contexts and of the pedagogical limitations and issues inherent in using an historical approach. Specific focus of the seminar, such as the Dickens Novel, will be listed in the schedule of classes and on student transcripts.

Disease processes in humans. Content selected for study is chosen specifically to enhance the RN student's understanding of basic pathophysiologic concepts and is essential to understand the rationale for clinical judgment and therapeutic intervention in disease conditions. The ability of human beings to adapt to stressors is discussed throughout the course. Concepts of pharmacology and drug therapy are integrated to allow students to utilize this information in clinical practice.

Environmental Law explores the foundation of legal principles that apply to U.S. environmental laws. Students will learn the basic premises of environmental law, and then apply these premises to current environmental issues. The goal is to expose students to a broad understanding of the scientific and socio-economic elements that go into environmental regulations. Current environmental issues, such as climate change, will be discussed. The course is meant as an introduction into environmental law. There is no course pre-requisite.

Laws and policies associated with marine resource management. The declining status and productivity of many of our marine resources has led to growing concern about human activities such as pollution, overfishing, and environmental degradation. The course explores the fundamentals of policy analysis in order to gain insights into issues including jurisdiction, harvest regulation, ecosystem approaches, and environmental protection.

Environmental impacts of contemporary globalization. The course reviews the effects of unregulated economic activity, rapid industrialization, and population growth in the Global South. The course also examines the effects of profligate consumption patterns, the practices of Northern-based corporations, and other aspects of the globalization process that impact the world's collective environmental security, such as unsustainable environmental practices that impact climate change, biodiversity, the world's natural resource base, and food supply.

PST 560 - Environmental Impact Globaliz

Environmental impacts of contemporary globalization. The course reviews the effects of unregulated economic activity, rapid industrialization, and population growth in the Global South. The course also examines the effects of profligate consumption patterns, the practices of Northern-based corporations, and other aspects of the globalization process that impact the world's collective environmental security, such as unsustainable environmental practices that impact climate change, biodiversity, the world's natural resource base, and food supply.

Basic concepts and perspectives in Women's Studies, placing women's experience at the center of interpretation. With focus on women's history and contemporary issues, the course examines women's lives with emphasis on how gender interacts with race, class, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. The central aim is to foster critical reading and thinking about women's lives: how the interlocking systems of oppression, colonialism, racism, sexism, and ethnocentrism shape women's lives; and how women have worked to resist these oppressions. This course satisfies a social science distribution requirement and the general education diversity requirement.
