MTEL Preparation Seminar Series

MTEL Preparation Seminar Series

Want to be a teacher? The jobs are there.
Prepare for the test requirements that all new Massachusetts public schools teachers need at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) program was initiated by the Massachusetts Department of Education in 1998 as part of our statewide education reform initiative for educators seeking PreKindergarten to grade 12 licenses. The MTEL program includes a test of communication and literacy skills (test #01) as well as tests of subject matter knowledge. The tests are designed to ensure that Massachusetts educators can communicate adequately with students, parents/guardians, and other educators and that they are knowledgeable in the subject matter of the license sought. Please visit the Massachusetts DOE MTEL website (www.doe.mass.edu/mtel/) for specific information on which test(s) are required for the Teacher license you wish to seek.

MTEL Communications & Literacy Skills (Test #1) – PRD 571
$170 (plus $30 Registration Fee)

The Communication and Literacy Skills test consists of two subtests: reading and writing. The reading subtest contains multiple-choice items and word meaning (vocabulary) items. The writing subtest contains four sections: written summary, written composition, grammar and usage, and written mechanics. Areas tested include the comprehension and analysis of readings; development of ideas in essay form on specific topics; outlining and summarizing; interpretation of tables and graphs; and mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics.

MTEL Foundations of Reading (Test #90) - PRD 572
$
170 (plus $30 Registration Fee)

An MTEL preparation class is available to support teachers, and future teachers, who are planning to take the MTEL Foundations of Reading Test # 90.  This class will provide support for students as they review for the assessment in a collegial group.  Key content areas of the exam and test taking strategies will be covered during three class meetings. Sample questions will be discussed and practical approaches to developing essay responses will be taught.  It is recommended, but not required, that students obtain a copy of the book Beating Them All! by Chris Nicholas Boosalis and bring it to class.

MTEL General Curriculum – Math Subset - PRD 573
