In 2001, the College of Visual and Performing Arts at UMass Dartmouth celebrated the opening of the Star Store campus in downtown New Bedford, Massachusetts. Once the center of the city's bustling downtown retail district, the long dormant department store was reborn for the 21st century as the centerpiece of a thriving urban arts movement. This state-of-the-art facility is home to hundreds of artists working in a variety of disciplines. Many of the spacious, well-lit studio facilities offer stunning views of the New Bedford Historical National Park and Atlantic Ocean. The Star Store is also home to a number of impressive exhibition spaces--most notably the University Art Gallery, which features exhibitions of local, national, and international renown. Today, the Star Store continues to be a vital component of downtown New Bedford's emergence as a cultural and academic hub.
