COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

HST 343 three credits G
History of Greek Civilization
An introduction to the history of Greek civilization from Minoan and Mycenaean times to the Hellenistic period. Emphasis will be on cultural and intellectual developments in their social and political contexts. In this course, we will give particular attention to the Greeks in Sicily and Southern Greece (Magna Grecia). Athenian activities in Syracuse will be emphasized as described by Thucydides. The Greek Drama as history and drama will be studies with emphasis on Aeschylus who spend the last years of his life in Sicily. Finally, the coming of the Romans in the 3rd century B.C. and the end of Magia Grecia will be an important theme.

ARH 210 three credits
Studies in Art History: Ancient through Medieval Art
This course will investigate the history of art in its major forms architecture, sculpture, wall covering in paint and mosaic, and decorative arts from Ancient Greece (8th Century BCE) through the mid-13th Century CE, with special emphasis on the visual culture of Sicily. Lecture and class discussion will be integrated with on-site examination of many of the monuments of the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Normans, and Hohenstaufens throughout Sicily, such as the Greek temples at Agrigento and Segesta, the Roman villa at Piazza Armerina, and Palermo's Byzanto-Moorish Palatine Chapel of Roger II. Accompanied visits to museums of art throughout Sicily, such as Siracusa's and Giardini-Naxos' Archeological Museums, Taormina's Museum of Art and Popular Tradition, and Reggio di Calabria's world-famous, "Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia", home of the famous Riace bronzes, will form part of class work, reports, and discussions. Students will be asked to examine the critical relationships between Sicily's art forms and their social, aesthetic, political, and religious contexts. Students will be regularly asked to think and write critically on assigned topics.

FIA 243 three credits
Painting: Exploring Sicily
This course exposes students to the formal as well as technical elements of painting. Students may work in the painting medium of their choice. By focusing on Sicily's extraordinary natural landscape and built environment, students will explore form and the rich color and textural relationships found in each of the sites visited. Students with prior painting experience will be challenged to experiment with their chosen mediums and advanced compositional principles in an effort to develop their personal voice. Painted travel journals will be kept.
