Versions of Epic: Os Lusíadas [1572] and Encyclopedia Dramatica [2009]
100-word abstract: This dissertation will examine versions of epic across media forms by means of an interdisciplinary, comparativist approach involving the close reading of two major texts: Luís Vaz de Camões’s Os Lusíadas [1572] and the online wiki Encyclopedia Dramatica [2009], which is defined as a twenty-first century “digital epic.” In each of these works, I will explore how moments of “textual disturbance” function by exposing the ongoing tension between tradition and transformation within the epic genre. Moreover, the juxtaposition of Encyclopedia Dramatica and Os Lusíadas is intended to permit a fruitful re-reading of Camões’s text within the contexts of Postmodernity and the age of the Internet.
Language: English.

Valéria M. Souza is a 2010 Ph.D. candidate in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies & Theory.
