Biography
Dr. Zong-Guo Xia was appointed as Associate Provost for Graduate Studies at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth in September 2008. He served as Vice President for Information Technology of Lehman College, one of the campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, in 2006-2008. He was Professor and Chair of Environmental, Geographic, and Geological Sciences at Lehman College from 2003 to 2006 and Professor in the Ph.D. Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center from 2004 to 2008. He was a Co-Director of the Joint Center for GIS and Spatial Analysis at the University of Cincinnati from 1992 to 1993 and the Director of the program in Geographic Information Technologies at the University of Massachusetts at Boston from 1993 to 2003.
Dr. Xia finished his undergraduate education at the Central South University in China in 1976 and became a graduate student and researcher at the Institute of Geology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1978. He came to the U.S. in 1980, completed his M.S. in Geology and M.A. in Geography at the State University of New York at Albany, and received his Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the CUNY Graduate Center. Over the years, he has also taught at the Central South University, the State University of New York at Albany, Hunter College and Tufts University, in addition to the University of Cincinnati, the University of Massachusetts at Boston, Lehman College and the CUNY Graduate Center.
Dr. Xia’s current teaching and research interests include computer cartography, remote sensing, digital image processing, database systems, environmental modeling, and Geographic Information Systems. He has published over 40 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings and has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on more than 30 grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Army Office of Research, and multiple state and private sources. He has supervised several dozens of Masters and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows specializing in IT development and applications at multiple universities.
As Associate Provost for Graduate Studies, Dr. Xia’s major responsibilities include graduate program assessment and development, graduate academic programs and policies, oversight of graduate student recruitment and retention, graduate advising and support, and development of programs to foster research and scholarship.
