campanile

cam·pa·ni·le (kăm'pə-nē') - A bell tower, especially one near but not attached to a church or other public building.

Named for the Robert Karam Campanile, around which so much of UMass Dartmouth's teaching, learning and discovery occurs, the Campanil-E keeps alumni, faculty, students, staff and friends up-to-date on the regional, national and global impacts of our ever-evolving campus and the issues affecting us.

Celebrating 25 years of Med Lab Science

Alumni, faculty, students and friends are all invited to celebrate our Department of Medical Laboratory Science's 25 years of excellence in education and service at a reception on April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Dion Building Atrium. To RSVP contact Alumni Affairs at 508.999.8031 or ntooley@umassd.edu.

Over the last quarter century, Med Lab Science, one of the only programs of its kind in Massachusetts, has produced highly skilled professionals for the health care and bio-technology industries. This success is a result of the partnerships with hospitals from throughout the region and industry. As part of the April 24 celebration, the University will recognize Abbott Laboratories for a very generous gift of equipment which is enhancing the education of today's students.

Countown to Commencement 2008, two-day event planned May 24-25

Due to the University's growing number of graduates and the desire to make Commencement Day special for all students and their family and friends, the University has decided to split Commencement into two separate days - one for students receiving Master's and Doctoral degrees, and one for students receiving Bachelor's degrees. Nearly 1,600 students will be awarded degrees this spring.

Each ceremony will continue to be special, including addresses from the Chancellor, special guests, and student speakers.  Additionally, each ceremony will be followed by an informal reception that will allow students to take pictures with their faculty and deans and to introduce family and friends to the special people who have helped then attain their degree.

A powerful lesson of reconciliation April 8

Linda Biehl, co-founder and director of the Amy Biehl Foundation in the U.S. and the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust in South Africa, will speak in the Library Browsing Area on April 8, from 1:30 p.m to 3 p.m. about her daughter Amy's life and death in South Africa. Amy Biehl was a 1993 Stanford graduate who, while on a Fulbright to study the role of women and gender rights in South Africa, was killed by a group of young black South Africans who were fighting to end apartheid.

The four men who were convicted of the killing were ultimately released through South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Biehl family, in the spirit of their daughter’s fight for human rights, did not oppose amnesty, but rather offered their support for their daughter’s killers and challenged them to join with them in continuing Amy’s work. Linda Biehl will be joined April 8 by one of the young men on April 8.

There will be a reception following the presentation in Room 115 at the Charlton College of Business.
