Library and scholarships supported by $1 million gift

Robert F. Stoico, founder of The Robert F. Stoico / FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, announced December 5 that the Foundation will make three separate $1 million gifts to: UMass Dartmouth, Bristol Community College of Fall River, and Roger Williams University of Bristol. The gifts will be used for scholarships and projects within the schools.

Mr. Stoico was the longtime CEO of the former FIRSTFED America Bancorp, Inc. which had its roots in Fall River. Stoico emphasizes that many of his employees were educated locally at the institutions named above and the three million dollar gifts aptly recognize this fact. FIRSTFED was first and foremost a community banking institution; its employees were the fabric of the community.

"The Faces of Diabetes" to air throughout December

UMass Dartmouth Nursing student Jessica Parish develops a program to help people treat and cope with diabetes

Residents in Dartmouth and neighboring communities will hear the first hand experiences of people with diabetes thanks to an innovative program called "The Faces of Diabetes" developed by UMass Dartmouth Nursing Student Jessica Parish.

Parish, a Walpole resident, created the half-hour TV segment to air on Dartmouth Community Television (DCTV) as her senior community nursing project. She was assisted by Wendy Henderson, Dartmouth's public health director, Cynthia Marland, DCTV's director, and Katherine Howard, UMass Dartmouth's nursing instructor.

"Diabetes is a huge problem in this area," Parish said. "I wanted to get the message out about what it is, who is at risk and how to take care of it and cope with the disease. I could have offered a lecture, but then I thought `who would come?' Doing this (TV) program was the most widespread route to reach people."
