LEADS (Leadership for Educational Attainment Developed Through Service) is a collaboration between the Center for Civic Engagement at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, and the Fall River and New Bedford Public school systems. It is funded by a Commonwealth Corp grant from the Massachusetts Governors’ office.
LEADS Corps Members
The program is designed such that University students teach leadership skills through service learning projects. LEADS is designed to empower middle school children to believe in themselves while they actively work to make our community a better place to live.
The goals of the program are:
a) to increase school and civic engagement
b) to increase leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities
c) to further develop student appreciation for and understanding of the importance of educational attainment.
Middle school students develop a service-learning project that is important to them through research of their community needs. Once they have defined their project, the LEADS team members (college students) create fun activities that integrate leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Children also learn about the importance of education and self-discovery through reflection.
We look forward to our continued success in increasing middle school childrens’ leadership skills and empowering them to believe in themselves. They can and will make a difference!
