Professor Chad J. McGuire joined the Department of Pubic Policy at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Fall of 2008, where he currently is an Assistant Professor.  Professor McGuire has a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Environmental Science, a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) in Law, and a Masters of Legal Letters (LL.M) in Environmental Law.  He is currently the program director for the online graduate certificate in environmental policy. In that capacity, Professor McGuire is responsible for curricula development and student advisement. He is also active in the campus sustainability initiative.

Besides teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at the university, Professor McGuire is also an accomplished author.  Inaddition to over twenty published scholarly articles, Professor McGuire has completed the manuscript for his first academic text, "Environmental Decision-making in Context: A Toolbox," CRC Press (an imprint of Taylor & Francis). The book, part of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA)'s Series on Public Administration and Public Policy, is meant to offer foundational techniques in environmental decision-making, and is meant to support both academic and practical applications.  The text will be available April, 2012.  Professor McGuire has also signed a contract with Taylor & Francis for another manuscript tentatively titled "Adapting to Sea Level Rise in the Coastal Zone: Law and Policy Considerations."  This book will focus on adaptation strategies that can be employed to deal with the effects of climate change in the coastal zone.  The book is tentatively scheduled to be released in mid-2013.  Access to much of Professor McGuire's scholarly work can be found at http://works.bepress.com/chad_mcguire/

Professor McGuire carries both academic and professional credentials.  He is a licensed attorney in Massachusetts, California, and Nevada, passing the Nevada bar exam while still a law student.  Professor McGuire continues to advise private and public organizations on environmental law issues and is active in providing free legal advice to clients of limited means through local non-profit organizations.  

Professor McGuire's expertise has been sought out by a number of media sources. He has been quoted in various national news outlets, including the New York Times and Boston Globe. 

Professor McGuire is a gubernatorial appointee to the State Department of Conservation and Recreation Stewardship Council as well as an appointee to the advisory board of The Coastal Systems Group's Massachusetts Estuaries Project at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST).  He is also a state appointee to the Discipline Hearing Committee of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers.  He has been recognized for his pro bono legal assistance by the Southcoast Legal Services Community, being awarded the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year in 2010 and also receiving the First Justices’ Award for Pro Bono Excellence in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
