Whether presenting marine science in classrooms, exhibiting at public events, or conducting cooperative research with the fishing industry, SMAST students, along with professors and staff, fan out into the community to help fulfill the school's public engagement mandate. But the school's community contributions aren't limited to marine science. Most recently, Profs. Jim Bisagni (SMAST) and Memory Holloway (CVPA) organized a crew from their respective schools last weekend to prepare the food for the New Bedford Salvation Army's Thanksgiving dinner. Participating from SMAST were Abigail Finger, Sara Sampieri Horvet, Natalie Jones, Georgia Kakoulaki, Chang Liu, Cate O’Keefe, Marco Pedulli, Chrissy Petitpas, and Katherine Thompson, and staff member Kent Gardner. At left, Kent Gardner doles out the cranberry sauce. At right (l. to r.) Prof. Jim Bisagni explains an element of food preparation to Chrissy Petitpas and Marco Pedulli. The Salvation Army dinner went on to feed some 350-400 people.
