Stephenson's work in Honduras was commissioned by the United Nations Population Fund for the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo during 1994 and portraying AIDS and the sex industry in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Central America.

"Originally viewed strictly as a medical disease, AIDS has emerged as another disease of disadvantage and deprivation, inextricably linked to sociological factors such as poverty, social status, urbanization, etc. The picture that is taking shape is of a virus which behaves like a misery-seeking missile, seeking out populations made doubly vulnerable by their lack of information, and by their health, behavioural, and socio-economic status (particularly: women ). This pattern is visible on a national as well as international scale. The countries hardest hit, most of which are in the developing world, have the fewest resources to deal with the effects of HIV/AIDS or to contain its spread."
