"Celebration of Two Launchings"
Friday, June 5, 1998
Boston Harbor Hotel
Rowe's Wharf, Boston, MA USA.
This event features the historic schooner Ernestina and
author Roland Barth, plus a very colorful "surround" of music and arts, all
to benefit literacy, Cape Verdean culture, education in the Boston metro
area and beyond.
The Ernestina is the Amistad of New England, and you don't have to trek to
Mystic to see her. Hers is the untold story, though. She is the only
official sailing ship of the Commonwealth, according to legislation
approved by the governor back in 1982. Most important, at 104 years old,
she is one of the most famous ships in the world and a National Historic
Landmark!
Roland Barth, somewhat younger than Ernestina, is a renowned educator who
chose this occasion to announce the publication of a great new book because
he wants to support education that is active, fun, and dynamic - and
Ernestina's mission is the same. His wonderful new book "Cruising Rules: Relationships at Sea" is excerpted in the
current issue of Harvard Magazine.
|
4:00 - Heavenly Fire, a youth group from Dorchester that plays home made
steel drums with great fanfare, sets the tone outside the pavillion.
4:30 - Milli Blackman from Harvard formally opens the celebration. 4:35 - John Braman, Ernestina Commissioner - Acknowledgement of Heavenly Fire and introduction of Roland Barth. 4:38 - Roland Barth explains how all this came to be. Book and program launching. 4:45 - Fred Littleton tells story of M. (Fred is one of the surviving "Bartlett Boys", now 75 and harbormaster in Martha's Vineyard) 4:50 - Tom Goux, sea chanty expert and Ernestina Program Coordinator - vocal performance followed by group sing. 5:10 - Reading from Cruising Rules by Petra. 5:15 - Poem recitation by Manual Da Luz Gonçalves, well-known Cape Verdean educator and poet. 5:25 - Ernestina's captain introduces young graduates of the Ernestina program who will speak about their sea experience. 5:35 - Roland Barth reads a Cruising Rules story with comments. 5:45 - Tom Goux leads all in a musical blessing of the fleet (lyrics will be handed out) 6:00 - End of program; Heavenly Fire performance resumes. |

O Testamento do Senhor Napomuceno |
|
ONE WEEK ONLY! EXCLUSIVE NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE!
OPENS FRIDAY JUNE 19 |
O Testamento do Senhor Napomuceno
(Mr. Napumoceno's Last Will and Testament)
(Portugal/Brazil/Cape Verde/France/Belgium l997) Directed by Francisco Manso
featuring Nelson Xavier, Maria Ceica, Chico Diaz. Portuguese with English
sub-titles.
Based on a novel by Cape Verdean native/author Germano Almeida (considered one of the best contemporary writers in the Portuguese world), TESTAMENTO is an absoulute treat for the eyes. Shot in the tiny Cape Verdean city of Mindelo, off the coast of West Africa, the film unfolds against breathtaking mountains, desert terrain, endless beaches, and extraordinary light, colors and contrasts. The story centers around Mr. Napumoceno, the wealthiest businessman in Cape Verde. His death in l984 touched everybody in the city of Mindelo-especially his nephew Carlos, who anticipated inheriting his uncle's business and estate. Unfortunately for Carlos, his uncle's life was full of secrets that were only revealed in his will and through the tapes he left for his illegitimate daughter, Graca, the surprise heiress to his fortune. What follows is a light-hearted romp through the secrets, business capers and romantic escapades of the town's most intriguing character. This award-winning film features renowned Brazilian actors, a sensational soundtrack boasting the sounds of internationally acclaimed Cape Verdean musician Tito Paris, and an appearance by world-famous diva Cesaria Evora.

ASSOCIAÇÃO CABOVERDE NA CORACACO |
-Carta de Apresentaçao da Associaçao-
Ola criolos (e nao) da diaspora. Tudo cool ?
