The 1996 New England So Sabi Cape Verdean Folklife Festival
Student Art Competition


What:

An art competition open to young artists (5-18 years old) living in New England. Selected work will be included in an art exhibition sponsored by the Boston Center for the Arts and part of the 1996 New England So Sabi Cape Verdean Folklife Festival.

Goal:

The exhibition will celebrate the history and cultural traditions of the Cape Verdean people as expressed through the knowing eyes of young artists.

Where:

The BCA's Cyclorama at 539 Tremont Street in Boston (South End), Massachusetts.

Timeline:

May 6, 1996 Deadline for Submission &
Delivery of Artwork
May 20, 1996 Notification to Participants
May 31-June 1, 1996 Exhibition Open to the Public
June 14, 1996 Deadline for Picking Up Work

Eligibility:

Submissions must be made by classroom teacher or by a host organization. Students may not make applications to the show on their own. Classroom teachers/program coordinators may submit up to 15 works total with a completed application.

Criteria:

Work can not exceed 16" x 20" and must be able to be hung on a wall. Individual work must be labeled on back with the following information: Title; Medium; Artist's Name and Age; Organization/School's Name, Address, and Telephone Number.

Awards:

Work will be judged in three categories: Elementary School (ages 5-11); Middle School (ages 12-14); and High School (ages 15-18). Cash awards for first ($40), second ($25) and third ($15) place winners from each category will be awarded.

Handling of Artwork:

The BCA will handle artwork with care but can not accept responsibility for lost or damaged materials.

Delivery and Return of Work: Work can be dropped off or mailed in a pre-paid, sturdy container by May 6, 1996. Work may be picked up between June 3-14, 1996 (Monday- Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm). If you would like work mailed back to you, please submit a pre-paid sturdy container when work is delivered.
