What:

So Sabi: The 1996 New England Cape Verdean Folklife Festival will celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Cape Verdean community in New England. Performances, exhibitions and workshops will take place in the Cyclorama, the Center's three theaters and the outdoor plaza.

When:

Friday, May 31 - Events for School Children (Elementary, Middle & High School)
Saturday, June 1, 12 noon - 7pm - Events for General Public

Admission:

Free admission to the public with limited seating.


Program

Many artistic disciplines will be represented including:

  • Music performances and workshops will feature Ivo Pires Band featuring Celina Pereira, Afrique Show, Alberto “Quimzinho” Rodrigues, Antone Toi Grace and the Verdatones, Vicki and Flash Vieira and the Creole Sextet.

  • A Children’s Art Exhibition will feature contest winners from schools throughout New England.

  • Children’s Art Workshops will be lead by Maria Evora-Allen and Lynn Rosario throughout the festival.

  • Films chosen by the advisory committee.

  • Slides and Photographs will be presented by Ron Barboza.

  • Storytelling will feature Len Cabral.

  • Batuku dance will be performed by The Tchabeta Dance Troupe.

  • Special Performances will feature Pilon Cola Ensemble, Arts in Progress.

  • Poetry by Filinto Silva, Vasco Pinto and Ambriezeth Lima.

  • Traditional craft demonstrations by New England craftspeople.

  • The Community Network: an opportunity to connect with community organizations.

  • The Vendors Market: featuring Cape Verdean products and crafts.
