Hi everyone! AOL has not been kind to us this past month so I have not been able to sign on. But, thanks to a few quick fixes on our part...we're up and running again. I am seriously concerned for the young Cape Verdeans living in New Bedford. The scorge of drugs and the lack of self-esteem concerns me a great deal.
I grew up there and it was a wonderful place to grow up...(believe it or not), at one time. No longer do you see Cape Verdeans celebrating their heritage and culture.

I am the grandson of an Cape Verean immigrant who came here
in the early 20th century. I am currently researching historic
information on the immigration conflicts Cape Verde immigrants
faced during the emigration. I would also like to find any
remaining family of Gregory Montero, who lived in North Providence, R.I.
it would help so much. He died before I could learn about him or his country.

I learned of your country through a 1904 book about whaling. It had lovely photos of the towns. It said many people from Cape Verde emigrated to the U.S. to work on whalers. If I recall, the ship was the "Sunbeam." I teach American Literature and found the book to be interesting to help students understand Melville's "Moby Dick."

I am a 21 year old Cape Verdean at the United States Military Academy at West Point. I am in my senior year here and am going to Graduate on May 31, 1997. I am the Captain of the Women's Soccer team here and will be staying here for the fall semester to be a graduate assistant to our soccer program. I was born in Brava, Cape Verde and came to this country in
1966 at the age of 5. I still have a few relatives over
there but I have yet to go back to visit. Many of my cousins
go back once a year and they love it. I currently work as a
Manager with the Department of Revenue. I'm so glad I
stumbled across this home page. I agree with a lot of you
that it's so sad that people don't know who Cape Verdeans are.

I am extremely proud to know that we the Capeverdeans all over the world have a chance now communicate among ourselves through this homepage. Technology have always played a great role in the development of society, here is the proof once again. I am asking all Capeverdeans who actually have a chance to get into this homepage to use it, but to use it in a positive way so that our people and our country will benefit from this initiative. It is really hard to find any information or news about Cape Verde in so many regions in the world where all of our brothers and sisters live. But with the creation of this homepage it is possible for us to inform each other no matter where we are in the world about issues and concerns that we as one people with the same destiny which is immigration can learn more about the different aspects of immigrations in different regions of the world. We could also use it a medium of exchange of informations and news from Cape Verde and its people to all other CapeVerdeans all over the world. Also we can use it to promote the culture and traditions of our country. To show the world what is Cape Verde and who Capeverdeans, so that when some of us say we are Capeverdean that the world know who we are. I also would like to mention one way that I think this home page will be extremely useful for, and that is to help the descendants of Capeverdeans all over the world to understand what is their heritage. Mainly to promote our identity worldwide. Also to help those same people to find out who were their ancestors and what island were they from. I am an attorney in Somerville , Massachusetts
concentrating in Immigration Law. I was born in Praia ,Cape
Verde , but grew up in Fogo and S.Vicente. I attended the
Liceu Gil Eanes in S.Vicente . I lived in Almada , Portugal
I have been living in the United States since l977.I am interested in discussing the current situation in Cabo
Verde , particularly the recent interference of the
government in the Judicial Branch. It is my understanding
that the Government is bringing damage action against a
judge who had previously ruled against the Fabrica de
Cigarros de S. Vicente but was subsequently reversed by the
CV highest Court. Claiming that the previous decision had
cost the government money they are suing the judge for the
money lost.(I am not making this up)If we allow this to happen soon there will be a "SIM
SENHOR" judicial system who will comply with every
governamental actions and requests. A STRONG judiciary is
the cornerstone of every democracy . Let it also be Cape
Verde's.I would like to hear your opinion.

My husband is a Cabo Verde from New Bedford, Mass. We live in Hawaii and have not met a fellow Cape Verdean that lives here. I am not Cape Verdean but since I was introduced to the Cape Verdean community in New Bedford, I have been so interested about the race. I know very little about it, only from what I've read through books and from the experiences I've had with my in-laws. Every time we visit them in Boston I learn more and more about how it is so similar to the Portuguese culture I've grown up with here in Hawaii.I love to cook, and so does my husband. I especially like it when he makes Cape Verdean dishes, I think that the food is FANTASTIC!! I really love manchupa or kachupa.
We recently discovered a small Cape Verdean display at an annual Portuguese Festa. We were disappointed that we couldn't find the Cape Verdean woman that had owned the display. I'm looking in to setting up a booth there next year and every year if I could. My husband would also like to introduce Cape Verdean cooking to the Festa. If someone would PLEASE send us anything about Cape Verdeans in Hawaii we would greatly appreciate it!!

I am of Cape Verde descent and I currently go to school in
the southwest part of Virginia. I was so astonished to hear
that many people have not even heard of Cape Verde, let alone
know where it is. Growing up in Providence, there are Cape
Verdians all over the state. I do not know much about
my heritage and I wish to know more. My grandfather always
did things with the people in the area, but the closest thing
that I have done is go to the Cape Vedian Festivals.
While I was visiting a friend in Hampton, I went to the music
store and saw a CD of this woman, and her last name was Evora.
That was the first time that I ever saw someone else with that
last name; it brought a smile to my face. I was thinking of
trying to trace my family background, but I really don't
know how to do that. If anyone would like to send me any
kind of info/material on anyhting about Cape Verde that would
be interesting, please E-mail me.It was nice to see that there are many Cape
Verdians trying to keep in touch with there own!!

Tito Paris will be playing in Oslo, Norway, the 7th of
March.
The day after, Kanda Bongo Man from Zaire plays. Two stars
with hot music!
Tito brings a full set of brass horns. Anyone near Oslo at
that time should go to "Cosmopolite" to meet Cape Verde´s
great koladeira singer.
I went to concert with him in Praia, in -95. The crowd knew
all the lyrics, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Late at
night, he turned more and more into the heavier part of
funana! We will expect more of that in March!

For those you fellow CVs who are displaced (from CV,
New Bedford, etc), and cannot regularly purchace the
sweet bread and lingucia that we all must have...there is
an alternative (Plan B, if you will). If you are near a Filipino
store, you'll be able to get similar foods (due to what I
call the 'Magellan factor'). My wife, who is Filipino, alerted
me to: "Longanisa," which is very much like linguica
(it's a little mushier before it is cooked. Not as good as
linguicia, but still very very tasty). The other food is
a pastry called "Ensaymada," which tastes just like
sweet bread. In fact, some of these 'ensaymadas' contain
a purple cream made out of a vegetable called 'ube.'
This is unbelievably good! Get it if you can.

Hello,I am a Cape Verdean American from Freetown, MA (just outside
of New Bedford). I'm currently at school at Bowdoin College in Maine.
In my first course in Africana Studies we are learning about the Diaspora
of African peoples and about the unique blends of peoples, such as the Cape
Verdeans, that developed during Colonialism from the mix of Europeans and
Africans.
My grandfather was born on the island of Brava, and to the best of my
knowledge I may still have relatives in the "old country." I find Cape Verde
and its history very fascinating and hope to visit there sometime in the near
future. I have relatives that have gone and brought back pictures and stories.
Although my region in SE Mass is very populated with Cape Verdeans and
Portuguese, I unfortunaley never learned the language like some of my cousins
did. I hope to study and learn it someday. My knowledge of Spanish helps in
understanding Portuguese and "Crioulo" but I can't speak it at all. I think that
it is important for Portuguese speaking peoples everywhere to keep in contact,
share their culture and heritage and to assert to everyone that the Portuguese
do NOT speak Spanish!!!

I would like to suggest that all those that visit this site
please also visit the Cape Verdean Student Association of
Boston College their home page. (CVSA) was established
2 years ago by three Cape Verdean students that felt that
there was a need for the BC community to learn more about
Cape Verdeans. In the past two years we have had the Prime
Minister of Cape Verde and the Honorable President as well.
The organizations has also established a community service
to the island of Sao Vicente, where it does community service
in the hospital, the high school, and the Orphanage
"Nho Djunga". This year we are planning this trip again, and
we would like tat people of the Cape Verdean Community help us out. Any little bit helps. Our trip will take
place from March !-(, 1997. If youyou would like to make any

It's great to read through the CV web site. I'm a long-time
resident of New Bedford, and grew up in neighboring
Dartmouth, MA. I'm still in the service, and I'm currently
stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ, as the National Guard
Advisor here. Amazingly, the commissary on base sells
Gaspar's Linguica, and a small store in town sells Sweet
Bread, so we're able to feel a little more like we're home!

I am a singer, voice teacher, and opera director at Southwest
Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. I am interested in
finding out what cultural opportunities there might me in the
Cape Verde Islands: university, concert series, opera,
symphony, church music, etc. Are there any composers,
especially of vocal music, from the Islands?

I served as Chief Advisor to Cape Verde on Export and Investment Promotion from 1991 to 1993.
I worked in PROMEX. I'd be interested in developments since 1993 in new investment, new exports and privatizatiion.
Unfortunately, my tour in CV was cut short by a mugging, which left me rather badly injured. But I have fully recovered.
Otherwise, I have fond memories of this simpatico nation.

The main purposefor this is so that we can bring together our community resources,through the usage of a very powerful and convenient means. We aretalking about the World Wide Web.
