Mocambique and South Africa. I will be passing through Ilha do Sal

Belic's brand of freestyle filmmaking brings an infectious energy to this documentary, which is both a powerful, personal portrait of a musician and the story of a unique cultural exchange.

It all started with a 1977 dinner conversation in which renowned physicist Richard Feynman challenged his friend Ralph Leighton to find Tuva on the map. There it was, wedged between Siberia and Mongolia, and soon the two men became the first Americans to travel to Tuva. They eventually paved the way for the country's most famous singer, Kongar-ol Ondar, to perform in the United States. At about the same time, Paul Pena was scanning his shortwave radio and stumbled upon one of Ondar's songs. Fascinated, he spent the next decade teaching himself the techniques by which a singer can produce up to four notes simultaneously. The migrants living in our neighbourhood are confronted with European society values: The title of "Dr." is used a lot in the Portuguese society: If you no longer work with the body, if you are someone in charge over others that work with their bodies, you are a "Doutor". It is not the profession that defines you anymore; you are not economist, social worker, mathematician but a "Doutor". A barrier is created.

"Here, we ask the university graduated staff not to call themselves "doutor" but to assume their profession, whether it's social worker, psychologist, economist or other, and to make the body/mind link, at least at a symbolical level...

"So we also ask them to undertake some physical works, in a rotation scheme with all the staff and trainees, for instance: empty the dustbin. (It takes a lot of doing to throw out the garbage; after years of fight the services of the Council still haven't placed a garbage container near the Association). We also ask the graduated staff to tidy their plate after lunch and to clear their desks and shelves. This option has been made because we are aware that speeches and treaties about hygiene and neatness are much more strengthened if you set the example... It is an acceptance of the body, of the physical space and of the works that come from the body."

"4. The second generation adapts even more to the rhythms and spaces - expressions of the Portuguese. Nevertheless: They don't tolerate the discriminations to which their parents were subjected. They have firmness and denounce their problems. Rap groups rehearse their music at the Moinho: Menace II Society, Dream Factory and Emissores express their anger in their lyrics. We find that it is very important that politicians listen to them. These youngsters know that the problem lies is in a Department of Education that doesn't recognise the Creole 3 as a language, that doesn't have teachers motivated to teach and educate children of migrant families, that has school boards that don't respect their parents."

Cape verde is one of the 20 poorest country in the world.
Cape Verde has 1.1 million inhabitants. However, only about 400 000 are living in the islands.
The rest have gone overseas in the search of a job and a better way of life.
Half of Cape Verde population in the islands is under 14 years old.
The average age of its current habitants is 23.
Only 5% of its habitants are over 65 years old.

Half of the population aged 15 and above are analphabetic
Cape Verde become independent from the Portugese in 1975
Democracy has recently been introduced in the islands.
However, The Cape Verdian democracy is just a joke.
The countries economic difficulties and corruption among political leaders
Makes the dream of democracy into an illusion to the people of the islands.
(Yet, one may argue, that it takes time to develop an ideal state of a democratic system)
Average income in the islands is about $1000 a year.
However, The Cape Verdian people are kind and enjoy making their guest feel welcome.

The difficulties that young people encounter in the islands have lead to an increase in criminal activities.
This criminal activities however are not life threatening in any way.
These kids mostly only steals small pocket money from tourists to buy food.
However, Any human being could engage in these sort of criminal activities
when being desperate and without hope.

Three man and women were random chosen for the current interview.
The translator Mr. Olavo Fortes, born in Cape Verde island in 1934 and married to a Norwegian in 1956.
Two Kids and 20 years later, the marriage was over. Mr. Fortes then returned to the islands in 1975.
His language skills have however not yet been lost. Mr Fortes remains fluent in Norwegian.

Mr. Skotheim and Mr. Fortes prepared some simple questions for
the elderly. The same questions were addressed to all respondents.
We will present you the situation of the elderly in the island
by looking at the characteristics of these respondents.
We will however, leave the analyse of these respondents up to
individual interpretation.

Anna Maria Santos Age : 85 have 10 kids.
None of them can afford to help her.
Albert Lime Gomez, at the age of 31
He had an accident in the work place which destroyed one of his feet.
And has ever since become a street beggar

Albert Lime Gomez, Age: 61
Had a wife and 7 kids,
the only 5 alive face the same life style as their father.
Hunger is the only thing that is for sure in their life.
He has no income, no pension and
no compensation from any insurance company.
He has to pay for his own medicine.
The general idea among the elderly is that they deserve to die,
not to remain a burden to the society.
He hates the corruptive society that Cape Verde has become.
He cries back to the days when Cape Verde
used to be a colony of Portugal.
Due to the fact that in those days those creatures
less fortunate like him would have support from the government.

Gregorio Miquel Oliveira, Age: 64
Father to 15 kids, none of which has the possibilities
to help him financially.
Yet he lives with a son of age: 32

Maria Isabelle, Age: 56 , have two kids, aged: 36 and 16
She lives together with the kid aged 16.
She's never had a serious job. Only some part time to survive.
Professional beggar at the vegetable market in Mindelo.
She has no friends with a somehow normal life.


Anna Maria De Santos, Age: 85
10 kids, only 3 are alive. All of whom being in the same situation as their mother.
She detests development a la 'Cape verdian style'
Yet she cries that the nation could have been better off
with other leaders.
She is strong and has never sick.
Oh... Yes. She has been sick once, but could however,
not afford to pay for the prescribed medicine.

The story goes on and on...............................................

Please think of what you can do for our People.
Cape verde islands need patriots that want to build the country
not destroyers.

Whats up! Cabo Verdes just given a shout out
to New B. Im still living out here in hawaii
we have a new cape verdean being born out here
my wife (a local girl from hawaii) Roberta will
be giving birth some time this month.
Cape verdeans arent a well known nationality
here in hawaii so I'll have to explain it again when
its time for the birth certificate.
almost everyday Im asked "What are you?" meaning what
nationality. Then I get the chance to school someone

First and foremost, I send out a strong embrace to the Cape Verdean
people throughout the world. On February 24, 1999, Maya Angelou will
recite some of her works in the Lyman Hall at Southern Connecticut State
University. The admission prices are as follows: $20 for none S.C.S.U

I am a sophomore at Howard University. I was born in Lisbon, Portugal and grew up in Rhode Island. Both of my parents are from Santiago, Cabo Verde. I truly enjoyed the poems by Renegade because I could really relate. Being crioulo in the U.S. has been a strange experience for me. I've always felt that there was no place for me in history and people were constanty putting me in the position to choose or declare which category I would best fit in at times when I didn't even know, I just knew that I came from somewhere else. I've always felt different from everyone else and at the same time special. I have always been proud of my cultural differences and I just want to encourage other Cape Verdeans to share their experiences and their knowledge of theirselves and their history with other people so that we can create a greater awareness of our existence and a better understanding of our experiences as Crioulos in the past and present.

What's up to my CV heads around the world!!!!

My name is Liza Goncalves, I'm from Boston but I'm living
in Philly now. I work at a tv station (DUTV Cable 54) producing music
video shows.
This summer my main show "The Avenue"(hip-hop show) did a
show from Cape Verde, highlighting Cape Verdean rappers. The program was
aired on 200 universities across the country.Which got me a hook-up
with Blaze magazine.
Blaze is put out by Vibe magazine and mainly deals with hip-hop.
So one of the writers was interested in writing a story on CV rappers
and I'm happy to say that in this months issue (March 99) with Redman
on the cover there's an article about it. So I just wanted to let everyone
know so ya'll can check it out!!!CV is definitly on the come-up!!!!
One last thing I also produce a world show and if anyone knows
where I can get some CV music videos or any other world videos please
let me know.

Route 128 to Route 24 south
At Exit 12 take Route 140 south to Exit 2
Then take Route I-195 west to Exit 12A

His point of entry is unknown (possibly Ellis Island or New Bedford). He was from San Antao, Cabo Verde. His father's name was John Pedro Chantre. As this another semester begins I would like to give a shout out
to all the Criolas, ma Criolos that are educating themselves whether
it be at the university level or elementary to junior high or high
school. Good luck. I would like to inform everyone that for the year
2000 there is a possibility that we can have our nationality
represented in the cencus.If we do this it will be a huge boost for
our culture. I feel it would be nice to know what our numbers are.
From there we will be able to know what percentage of cape Verdeans
are in College. Also we will be able to be more accurate on other
statistical figures. Well I have to go if you would like to know more
