Hello, to all the cape verdeans out there! I just what to
you about something I read about today.
On the front page of the Hartford Courant today there is
an article on Tiger Woods. In the article it talks about
his racial makeup of Black, Asian, Indian & White. Today
Tiger is going to be on Oprah show. He's going to be taking
about golf and his racial makeup. The point of all this is
the article goes on to talk about how The US Congress is
having a hearing exploring how the federal government
meacures race and ethnicity. The matter is integral to the
next census, to which some advocates want to add a
"mixed-race" category to accommodate those who no longer fit
neatly into the familir racial descriptions.
Some of the new categories include Arabs-Middle Easterners,
European Americans, German Americans, Creloes &
CAPE VERDEANS.
Now, correct if I'm wrong but cape verdeans have been here
for over a hundred years and we are just now getting notice!God Bless,

I would love to go to Cape Verdi one day soon. I would also
like to visit the other African Islands such as
Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Comoros and Mauritius.I have travelled to many places in the world and I love

I'm currently a student at the university of Connecticut, and this is my fourth year. When I first came to the school, I was one of the tow students who were "Caboverdianos". Because of the lack of "brothers" from the same homeland, I sort of got away from my culture. It is very difficult to get anything from home around these parts(music, literature,etc). I was extremely happy when I found out about this home page. Actually, it happened by accident, but anyhow, I'm still trylled because of it. I will become a "permanent" on this page. I am proud to be a decendant of a native of Cape Verde. My
Grandfather,Antonio Barros Barbosa was born in the village
of Kepville on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde in the year
of 1893. He came to the U.S. on a three (3) mast ship in
1913.He settled first in Pennsylvania then in Ohio.Our
family of Barbosas are many,now.We live all over the U.S.
We continue to be proud of our family name of Barbosa.

My parents just returned from Brava on 4/12/97. They built a new home in Lugarinho. It's on a hill and the view is just beautiful.
They video taped most areas of Brava and I can't believe how different I remembered it all. I can't wait to go back and visit.I can read French very well and some Protuguese and Criole.

I spent 3 months on the island of Fogo and more than a year in Portugal. I loved all the Caboverdianos I spent time with and loved the island of Fogo- Sao Filipe! We always sang the song:Quem quis partir pra terra longe que deixa mae que deixa pai... ate um dia que nos encontrar!

More information on the Cape Verde music and musicians actual activities would be necessary to spread such beautiful sounds like morna, coladera and funana around the world.
A little course on crioulo and a small dictionary with the basic words used on songs' lyrics would be nice too.

I am a Cape Verdean from the island of Sao Vicente... I've lived
in Philadelphia for the last 16 years. I am a teacher at the
Hill-Freedman Middle School and I teach Spanish and a Mentally
Gifted class that is learning about the Cape Verdean culture.

Thank you for your history on the Cape Verde Islands.
My family consists of Roy Teixeira Jr. whom I haven"t seen in 28 years. My grandfather was Augusto Martins Teixeira.
He died in Pawtucket RI. I remember as a child my family talking about the ships and their involvment. My mother"s
family were Tavares my grandmother's name is Eugenia
and I don"t know much except her mother 's name was Carlota Tavares and her father's name I don't recall.
I would appreciate any information you could give me or supply me with a way I could research my family.

I am originally from New Bedford. Lived in the New Bedford area since 1978 until 1992 when I left to continue my studies in New Mexico. I do currently live in FL and still have family and many friends in MA and I do hope that this wil lead to hearing from people that I've lost touch with in the last few years.
