    My family are Native Cape Verdeans. My Uncle Napolean Barbosa and my Aunt Silver (Barbosa) Thompson just returned last week from visiting Fogo, Cape Verde where my Grandfather, the late, Antonio Napolean Barras Barbosa was born. My Uncle Nape has been to Cape Verde on one other ocassion. It has been great learning more and more about my Cape Verdean roots via the internet. I have seen the websites unfold and develop over the past 8 months. I love to look and see what new things are going on. Recently, I helped to get together a package of clothing, medical kits and other necessaties that my uncle took with him to Cape Verde. It was great to help out. I also enjoy learning about native Creole foods and dishes. My late Mother, Antonia (Barbosa) Flowers used to cook many of the great foods native to my Grandfather's birth place. I sort of displaced those recipes, but now have reaquainted myself with those fine native foods. I am proud of my heritage and of my Cape Verdean roots.

    Joil Gonsalves was a gentlel giant a quiet warrior that move people
    with his wisdom,wit,humor. joli was a sweet embraceable man with a heartt full of love for all good people. He could make you swing and make you sing. He will never die his spirit his songs of joy and sadness can never be forgoten. His smile and that twinkle in his eyes.
    "Joli" one of our great teachers; 'guru' if you will of the Caboverdean
    beat and movement. A conductor a lightning rod for the Cabo Verdean history and culture. There was never a time when he Joli was not Caboverdean. I remember him wel,l when I came back from Africa;Guinea Bissau and Gil Fernandes as confidant of the late Amilcar Cabral met with him at his home. He Joli said that there has never been a greater man then Cabral for the freedom of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau We want the world to know that this American born Caboverdean stands tall in heavean along side Amilcar Cabral.
    Long live the memory of Amilcar Cabral long live the memory of John P.'JOLI'Gonsalves Long live the unity of the people of Cabo Verde and long live the unity of the people of Guinea.     First, was I totally shocked to sit at the immigration meeting in New Bedford yesterday afternoon (and wish so many more CVeans were there, the presentation was helpful, informative and important) and to hear Mary Barros ask for a moment of silence for our friend Joli Gonsalves. Since I have been out of the area on FEMA duty for a week, I was caught totally off-guard...and had to leave the room to compose myself. Joli helped me personally when I needed cultural assistance at Texas Instruments' first-ever cultural day in '95 and everyone there the pleasure of his knowledge and song - as a much appreciated Bonus as well as pleasant surprise! I was to have him staff a table at Lembranca, but he was too ill to make it. I promised him that I'd take the pictures to show him this week when I returned from deployment duty. I, as well as so many other Capeverdeans and citizens of the world, will miss my friend tremendously. Joli, I love you, I thank you, and may God welcome you home with open arms. The void you have left in this would can never be replaced!!! Deus Ba!

    On a happier note, our Capeverdean diaspora is THE BEST. I'd like to say a HUGE, formal thank you to Muriel and her son of California who saw my plea for a T-Shirt for Virgilio and on a shopping trip yesterday found one and bought it for me!!! I am asking her to send it to me so that I can bring it to him personally (a piece of luggage a URI student brought with her last year was unfortunately misdirected, hit 3 other countries before returning to America and then to Cape Verde and unfortunately all the contents were missing!!:(
    So, this time I will carry all items on the plane with me and allow MY personal belongings to be stolen if my luggage is lost. Mine can be easily replaced when we return, but I cannot as easily replace the efforts that went into getting gifts to bring there! Muito Obrigada to my new California friends and the Dr. who also e-mailed me with a few helpful suggestions. P.S. and cudos always go out to Richard Leary for starting and maintaining this home page!! (and his help in all the exhibits and seminars he can possibly fit in to his busy schedule that we ask him to attend, Richard you are one of the kindest, most generous people I know--we're so glad you are an "adopted/honorary Caboverdeano" it's a pleasure to have you in our family) MUITO OBROGADA to all!!!     I have an interest specifically in the connection of Cabo Verde and its Sephardic/ Jewish Roots. If anyone would like to explore this area with me, I would welcome the opportunity. I have collaborated with the local Cape Verdean Community in some programs that talked on this in a lecture by Richard Lobban. Also, a friend in South Africa is looking for input on cemetary records taht would link to Jewish ancestry. The objective in all cases is to come together in friendship and find commom roots and traditions.     Hi my CV friends,

    I am writing a friendly S.O.S. to see if I can find something for a Cape Verdean young man who helped me out when I was there last year. His name is Virgilio, from the island of SAL. We went to the salt flats and he went "miles" to get all of us the piece of salt we wanted to inspect. I primised Virgilio I would send him sneakers from the United States, which I did (yet, I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot to ask his size and guessed at possibly 10 men's, to which he phoned me "collect", yes I was "generous" enough to give him my phone number in America, but didn't realize he'd be resourceful enough to call COLLECT. Of course, to which I could not refuse the charges, UGH...to the tune of $40.00 for the few minute phone call!!!! Any way he called to say that the sneakers were "grande", but that what he REALLY WANTED was the Michael Jordan T-Shirt that he asked me for when I felt sneakers would have been a better idea....so much for my big Ideas. However, I cannot find a T-shirt with Michael Jordan on it to save my soul. I have been to Boston, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire (mostly for FEMA duty, for whom I work, I NOT THAT STUPID)..but to no avail. Does ANYONE out there know where/how I can get a Michael Jordan T-shirt to send to Virgilio. Poor thing, by this time, I can bring it to him personally, because I'm planning to return to the islands again this summer with the URI program. HELP!! I NEED A MICHAEL JORDAN T-SHIRT for VIRGILIO OF SAL...anyone?!?! Muito Obrigada, Barbara

I would like to thank all of those who are willing to participate. Also I would like to apologize to all those who did no meet my age criteria, but I have been influenced through several requests to set no restrictions due to age. So if there is anybody else interested in writing feel free you are more than welcome. Once again the wisdom of my elders is needed. In memorandum the requirements are.     I would like emphasize that the home page is a collaborative project involving the world-wide Cape Verdean community. The content on this site is provided by people in the USA, in Europe, in Cape Verde, and elsewhere - and the continuing evolution of this page reflects the direct and indirect influence of many Cape Verdeans and friends of Cape Verde. No small amount of credit for the content, character, and ongoing evolution of this web site goes to my primary collaborator and co-developer of this site, Mr. Raymond Almeida of Washington, DC.

    We do not wish to mislead. The degree of involvement by other than the members of the core development team is still modest. However, that involvement is significant and has continually grown since the establishment of this web site almost three years ago. As always, we strive to reflect and be responsive to the Cape Verdean community; to promote and support full, free, open, and creative expression and discourse; to promote the decentralization of CV Cyberspace, and increased participation and involvement of Cape Verdeans in cyberspace - be that "active" (providers of information) or "passive" (accessing information).

    We strive to present information that is accurate, relevant, informative, and stimulating, and to present it effectively. However, we wish to EMPHASIZE that the information found on, and via, this web site constitutes only a fraction of that which is needed for a complete and balanced appreciation of Cape Verdean history, culture, and society, whether that be Cabo Verde, Cape Verdean America, or elsewhere in the Diaspora. Also, it is only information - not flesh and blood reality - that we provide. Words, text, imagery - MEDIA - are powerful, and that power and potential (for understanding and confusion) must be acknowledged and respected. However, all the information and technology in the world can only take one so far if it is obtained solely from a computer screen, and if one has never met a Cape Verdean person or been to Cape Verde. In my case, however enlightened I am (or think I am), and however strong my social and family ties to Cape Verdeans (primarily Cape Verdean-Americans), not being Cape Verdean myself and having spent a grand total of 10 days in three of the Cape Verde Islands, my understanding and insight is limited accordingly.

    Reality, history, etc. - whether it be Cape Verdean, African, American, Portuguese, Cape Verdean-American, ... - can and must be seen from many viewpoints for complete understanding. Try as we may to illuminate and do justice to many of the topics of interest to visitors to this site, we are and always will be limited in doing this. We do not presume, pretend, perceive ourselves as, or plan to be the definitive or exclusive source/interpreter of information on Cape Verde or Cape Verdeans. It is only with more information from more knowledgeable people, from more perspectives, presented in additional contexts (web sites), from different or better writers and interpreters and artists, and with continuous critical review by the larger Cape Verdean community, that this medium in its totality will be able to do justice to Cape Verdean matters and adequately reflect the depth, diversity, dynamic and interests of Cape Verdean people, culture, and thought.

    On our part, the development team and its collaborators will continue in their efforts to promote and provoke such development.

    Here's an article a friend told me to read and because I think it's important to know about it, I figured why not put it here. I just I don't get in trouble for it.

    2000 Census critical to Cape Verdeans
    NEW BEDFORD On April 9, an important meeting regarding Cape Verdean
    Americans and the Census for the year 2000 took place at the New Bedford
    Library, at the initiative of Congressman Barney Frank. I had the pleasure to thank
    Congressman Frank for his initiative, and for the work that he has been doing
    regarding this issue.
    As I see it, it is an expression of utmost consideration for the congressman to
    come to the Cape Verdean community with an initiative that will help propagate
    information about the way Cape Verdeans can respond to the Census. I think that I
    speak for all Cape Verdeans when I say thank you, Mr. Frank, because this may be
    the only way to undo the negative aspects contained in the Census.
    This problem rests squarely on the shoulder of the group that has been working
    in the project of the Census 2000, which did not give proper consideration to
    requests from some Cape Verdeans who attended some meetings in Boston while
    the project was being discussed.
    In my opinion, however, we are far from the point of celebration. I am sure this
    become clear to all who were in the meeting. In fact, it is my opinion that the
    questions of this census are worse than the one of 1990 as far as the issue of
    Cape Verdean recognition is concerned.
    What is also disturbing is that the Standard-Times articles of April 7 gave the
    impression that the issue had been resolved. I am sorry to say that this is not the
    case. In the Census 2000, one has to answer nine questions, including the ones
    that define one in terms of race -- white, black, African American, Negro, Asian --
    before reaching question No. 10. Only then would one have the possibility to fill in
    information about one's ancestry.
    No! In Census 2000 there is nothing that jumps at you saying, "If you are Cape
    Verdean, check this box." Remember and pay attention! You have to write out that
    you are of Cape Verdean ancestry in question No. 10.
    The objective of this meeting was to discuss the creation of a task force to
    educate Cape Verdeans about this issue the Census 2000. If Cape Verdeans
    descendants register their ancestry in box No. 10 appropriately, we will have a
    better idea of the number of Cape Verdeans in the Census, and maybe by the year
    2010 "Cape Verdean" will have a specific box.
    A Cape Verdean American Vietnam veteran who was in the meeting said, "We

    A message to all my C.V. **** what the hell is going why is it that for the third time I have received a disturbing phone call telling me that one of my cousins has been killed. The point of our families coming to the U.S. was for our advancement not for genocidal reasons. Why are we killing eachother why . I would like for all Cape Verdean men and, teens to read this and, understand that life is beautiful. If we continue there will be alot of lovely Cape Verdean women out there without husbands alot of C.V. kids without fathers. The most messed up thing about it is that I have become so desensitized because it happens so much that this time I could hardly force the tears through my eyes.     a Happy Easter !!! Remember we need to continue representing our unique
    culture in a positive way. This homepage is an excellent way to bring more
    awareness to our islands. I want to thank Mr. Leary and the team who

    I just wanted to once again congratulate the developers of this page
    for a job well done. As Management Information Systems (MIS) major

    Very good info on Cape Verde, got interested a couple months ago,
    when a friend had me start looking for info on the "roots" of her
    father and grandfather from Praia, her father Adolph da Silva came
    to the US on a ship into Fla. found his way to NY and later married
    and relocated to Ohio. Grandfather was a Monterio, her father had
    9 siblings she would like to find out what happened to any of them?
