Is there any Cape Verdeans with whom I can get into contact
when I pass by England, France and Spain on my way to and

Is there any Cape Verdean with whom I can get into contact
when I go pass England, France, and Spain in my way to and 
from Portugal, between the 30th of June to 20th of July.  
I would love to meet with and speak my beloved criolo 
language which I haven't spoken much in one year - ever 
since I came to study African history for one year in South
Africa.

I worked in Praia 1983-85 (they called me Victor Branco

for liberation of our beautiful islands. To them I pledge
allegiance, to them I devote my life to teach others about
who we are as a people because they've allowed me to define
who I am as a man, and most important of all, who I am as an
AFRICANO. Long live AMILCAR CABRAL and all BLACK HEROES.

BLACK CHILD'S PLEDGE
I pledge allegiance to my black people.
I pledge to develop my mind and body to the greatest extent

people in their struggle for liberation.

I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
Day Saints (Known as "the Mormon Church" by some).  I lived
in Mindelo, Sao Vicente for about nine months.  I met some

I am Of Cape Verdean decent and would like to learn as much as possible 
about the Cape Verdean culture, especially the language and the foods.I would also 
like to have a Cape Verdean pen pal.My grandparents were Antonio and Fulgencia Baptiste. 
They came from Fogo and St. Vincente. They came to this country around 1911 and settled in

I am very interested in receiving information about the island of Brava. 
My father was born there on March 14, 1894...his name was Manuel Antonio Baptista. I 
was born in Providence, Rhode Island. My father came to America in 1916 landing 
in New Bedford, Massachusetts. They called my father Manuel Sanna. He moved to 
Providence, RI around 1919, met my mother while working in the Royal Weaving Mill in Pawtucket, 
RI and they were married. He belonged to the Holy Name Society which was connected to the 
Holy Rosary church located in the Fox Point section of Providence. 

I retired in March 1994 after working as a professional for  the United Way of America. 
I retired as executive vice president/campaign director of the United Way of 
Northeastern New York, Inc. in Albany. I would be interested in hearing anything 
you think would be of interest to me

My grandfather, Joaquim Pinto-Souza, immigrated from
St Vincent island via a whaling ship at about the turn
of the century. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to
meet him since he died before I was even born. Since I
missed out on the chance to hear from him about his homeland
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with firsthand
knowledge about Cape Verde or St. Vincent island
specifically.

My grandfather's last name was Pinto, but he took his
mother's maiden name of Souza. I've been told that he
lived in Liverpool, England for a while before ending up
in San Franciso, California. I only know about one brother
he had named Tony who lived in the North Beach section of SF.
My relatives here in California have told me that we
possibly have relatives living in New Bedford,MA and Brazil.

That's about it. Also if there are any long lost relatives
out there, I'd be really thrilled to hear from you too!

CABRAL'S CHILDREN, WE NEED YOUR HELP:  With the help of a 
couple of individuals, I'm in the process
of starting a AMILCAR CABRAL-BLACK PANTHERS chapter; we have no set idea of
where we intend to place some sort of "head quarters" or a 
main area of concentration. Also, in order to avoid negative
"vibes" coming from those who do not wish to see black men (all
blacks united as one to fight a common cause).
Our main objective will be to free our people (meaning Cape 
Verdians) of the "Colonail inferiority".  We also would like to devote a lot of our time
publishing a small newspaper or magazine with a main focus 
evolved around the spread of a "true Cape Verdian Culture" not only
to our people but to other Americans as well.  We would like 
to make it clear to all that violence is not our objective.  
We will need all
the help we can get from those willing to participate.  In a 
near future, we plan to develop a strategy which will allow us
to "properly" ask for donations and help with fund raisers.  The
money will ultimately go towards establishing a fund for poor
children in Cape Verde.  PLEASE HELP KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE.  IN THE 
WORDS OF AMILCAR CABRAL, THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES.  ALL POWER TO

it would be nice if you had some kind of page where you can
get whats going on up the cape during the summer months and the
rest of year. like dances picnics etc. where the people in
other states can plan on going. you have some things listed
but its not current and not up to date .last year we were
able to go to the so sabi festival in boston because of the
internet and we had a great time there is not to many cape
verdean functions in connecticut at all.

Looking for information on my ancestors who came to
Sag Harbor, New York from the Cape Verde Islands. Probably
worked in whaling industry since Sag Harbor was a port.
The spelling of their name on the cemetary marker is "JOSAY"
although the actual name may have been "JOSE'". If anyone

In february '94 I had a six week holiday , at Cabo Verde and I liked it a lot. Since then, I  manege  to receive  RNCV and Radio Nova
 on FM, when the atmosferic conditions are good..  Is it possible to order Cape Verdian music on-line?  I wonder, if the well with the healing water at Ribeira Grande still gives so plentifull.

I always enjoy reading the letters from capeverdeans all over the globe.
I just finished reading one from someone in Storrs, CT who advises us capeverdeans to learn "to love ourselves above and beyond anything" which is quoted from MALCOLM X.
Well, in my perspective that is exactly what is wrong with society today! Because we love ourselves too much, we have neglected a greater command, which is "love your neighbors as yourself." If we stopped caring so much about ourselves and started helping those in need around us, no matter what their colors are we would be in much better shape as a society.
Instead of paying attention to the Malcolm Xs of the world, look to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth and know the truth, and it will set you free!

I love my people and my country and that's why I would love to see them learn the TRUTH.

Hello, Cape Verdeans. I am a language and Mentally gifted teacher 
at Hill-Freedman Middle School in Philadelphia, PA. I have been teaching
my mentally gifted students about the Cape Verdean culture
since October. I would like to thank the creators of the Cape Verde
web page and all of the people that have established a relationship
with my students and I through the web page and E-Mail. My students
have taken advantage of this web page to learn about my mother 
country and to meet brother and sisters through out the world that have 
shared information about their experiences and knowledge of Cabo 
Verde.We are winding down the school year and it is  almost time for a nice 
vacation in Cabo Verde. I will be spending a month with family in
Lisbon and August in Sao Vicente (Festival)... I will be keeping
a video, foto, and written journal in order to create a 
Hill-Freedman Middle School Cape Verdean Web page that my Mentally
students will create in September. If any one else want to contribute
to my program at the school please E-Mail me before the last day of
school (June 17th). My plan is to be on a plane on June 20th
to Portugal and July 22nd to Cabo Verde.

Hi, I am an Italian Film Director and have moved to New York 10 years ago. Recently I have been working for Turner Entertainment here in the US specifically on a series called "Wild Life Adventures". I am plannin another film for them and I am very interested in the Cape Verde Islands.

Hi, Again.  I found our Home page on the 6th of May.  I signed
my name but didn't leave any comments.  I am so HAPPY that we
have a home page.  Well here is a little history about myself.
I am a Cape Verden from Carver, Ma.  I was born and raised there.
I went to Plymouth-Carver High School class of "82".  Then I 
serve in Marine Corps for eight years.  That brings us to the 
present.  I am a Federal Police Supevisor, with NSWCCD located in
Bethesda, Md.  I live in Northern, Va.  I have been alot of places
and haven't met alot of our people.  Again I like to say how happy
I am to see a home page.  Maybe know we can chat and understand our

i've started to search for more knowlegde about cabo verde, and I am looking for any insight information (not the "touristic" stuff), about what it is like there in terms of climate, economics, health- and social services.
Why? I'm looking for a place, I might consider to emigrate to in a couple of years. Where it is warmer and people have still time to live...

I've contacted the Boston Language Institute to ask about classes in
Cape Verdean Criolo....they said due to the lack of interest in learning this
language, they don't have a teacher on staff PLUS they say they haven't been able to find
someone who is qualified to teach this "regularly".  They would be willing
to set up a special group class if there was enough interest.  If anyone in the
Boston area or surrounding towns is interested in getting involved in this...please email me and let
me know so I can try to put something together.

It really upsets me to see some people ignore and fail to 
to understand where we come from as a race of people.  It
is always ironic that as "colored people", we tend to be 
the ones neglecting our "true" heritage and where we come
from.  Why must we always attempt to claim our so called
"Portuguese" heritage while denying where our "strong" 
roots come from.  I belive it is time for us to let go
of the mental colonialism and inferiority which we feel.
I'm just tired of reading coments adressed in a tone which
clearly demonstrates how "racial consciousness" is lacking
amongst us.  Please get rid of the shackles of colonialism 
and Portuguese culture.  It is true that we ought to get
along, but learn to love yourself first.  In the words of
Malcolm X, no one will respect us as a culture and people, 
unless we learn to respect and love ourselves. LEARN TO LOVE
THYSELF ABOVE AND BEHYOND ANYTHING.

I'm researching my family history surnames:

According to a document that I have, Antonio Barreto, my
great-grandfather, was born in St. Nicolau. He came to
Hawaii and married Maria Ramos. According to this docu-
ment, Antonio died on July 27, 1897 at the age of 64.

I'm not sure how accurate this document is, but I obtained
it from the Church Of Latter Day Saints, Family History
Center, in Kalihi, Oahu, Hawaii.

Also, according to this document, Antonio was a founding
member of the "St. Antonio Society." I cannot find any
information on this Society.

If any one has any information, I would greatly appreciate
it.

I live in Las Vegas, Nevada.  I grew up in Brockton, MA and attended Brockton, High School and graduated in 1985. My mother, sisters and my younger brother live in Dorchester. My oldest brother lives in Brockton.  It's good to see our country/nationality in the Internet.  I have read some of the articles about Cabo Verde and learned a lot of new information.  I didn't know anything on the political issues of the islands or our exact Ethnic background.  At least I know that now.  I hope somenone responds to my comments or just let me know you received this little note.  I don't know if there are any Creolos out here.  I can't tell if one walks by me.  I know they have a large number of us in San Francisco and Sacramento area, but again I never got to meet anyone. I'd like to learn more about the country and the language.  If you know of any courses in my area that would teach me the language please let me know.
I'm Cape Verdean-American,  my family came here in the early part of the century and settled in Plymouth and Newport, they wanted to be American so they 
changed their names and forgot the language.  I'm marrying outside of my ethnic group and would like my children to know where they came from and to know
as much as possible, it would be nice if they could communicate with their people as well.  I know that it really hurts me that I can't.  I know the basics.
I know that most of my family is from St. Nicholaus (forgive me I only know what it sounds like not how it's spelled) and the my family name in Cape Verde
was Ruberio.  The other part of my family is from Protugal and the West Indies, but mostly from Cape Verde.  The family name in Portugal was Nunes.  What

I was very excited when I found this Web site by accident.
My grandfather on my father's side sailed over from Brava to
the US when he was a teenager.  My mother's ancestry is from
Brava also.  I helped my son do a report on the Cabo Verde 
Islands, and we didn't find as much info. as we would have 
liked to.  I'm glad to tell my son about this site, so he 
can get more info. about our culture, and for future reports.
My father belongs to the Cape Verdean West Association
here in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I look forward to a 
couple of the annual events that my family attends.  I will
be at the Carnival in San Francisco on Sun., 5/25/97 to 
support the CV West Club, while they pull our float.  I also
will be attending our annual picnic in Vallejo, California
on Sun., 8/17/97.  If you are from the Bay Area and need 
more info. regarding the CV West Association's upcoming 
events, please send me an email.  I look forward to hearing 
from some of my people out here on the West Side.

Nice pages!
In Rotterdam I know some Cape Verdian people. There are
about 15.000 of them in my city).
For Christmas I went to visit Cabo Verde and visited
Sal, San Vicente and San Anton. At your site I recognized
a lot of the pictures. It makes me want to go and visit
the islands again.
And browsing the pages, following the links, I learned
some more of Cabo Verde.

So thank you for the site, keep up the good work!

Hello para todas as gentes Caboverdianas.O meu nome e Manuel
mas se voces quizerem pode-me chamar de Filipe e sou Natural da illa do FOGO Mosteiros
