    The question that is quietly being ask in the Cabo verdean community in cabo verdean circles,is why they can not have a Cabo Verdean Preist at the O.L.O.A. Catholic Church? We understand that a non Cabo verdean is being sent to Cabo Verde to learn the Cabo Verdean Culture. Many Cabo verdeans both Catholic and non Catholic take a quiet offence to such an idea. What is the problem do we not have any Cabo Verdean priest? We think that it would be great for our children to have a Cabo verdean preist as a role model of Christ.
    O.L.O.A. since 1902 the first Caboverdean Catholic Church in the U.S.A. has been a pillar of beauty and strenght for all these years, only once for a very short period we had Father Martin Gomes a American born preist at O.L.O.A. We of the Cabo verdean community
    at large would pray that Christ would send us a Cabo verdean priest.
    We do have a very wonderful Holy Bishop who is Caboverdean in Cabo verde;that is His excellency Bishop Evora. We Cabo verdeans pray to Deus that we will have a Cabo Verdean priest, we do have a wonderful Italian priest at St.Patricks in Boston,and he is so loved by the people of Cabo verde that he is called a HONORARY Caboverdean which is well deserved for all the good spiritual work he has done in Caboverde for 40 years and all the good work he has done to promote Christ and Cabo verde. Now we are asking for a son of Cabo verde to be the head of Christu at the O.L.O.A. We hope that in the love and honesty and the Grace of Christu we can have one.
    By the Grace of Deus. In our Sacred Heart. Deus Ku Nos.
    In the name of the father the son and the Holy Ghost. Amen.
    Salah.

    Greetings from Miguel Reabold, the current Peace Corps director in Cape Verde. This year Peace Corps marks its 10th anniversery of service in Cape Verde and we're trying to put some things together by way of a celebration. To all of you Cape Verde RPCVs who read this, what we'd like to do is include your comments as to how your Peace Corps service affected your life. Did it set you on a new career path? Did it affect how you see the world? Did it change who you are as a person? Or how you choose to live your life? Or not at all? Any comments would be appreciated. Or any ideas you might have as to how we can celebrate Peace Corps' 10th anniversery. And please pass along the request to any fellow RPCVs you may be in contact with. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Comments...

    Our sincere apologies folks. While we try to update the visitors book at least every 24-48 hours, sometimes longer delays occur. This can happen for a number of reasons. The primary one is that one person does the technical maintenance of the Home Page, of which the visitors book is only a part, albeit a most important one. Visitors book updating is a high priority task. However, if the person who does the updating is away from a computer for a few days - as happens sometimes - then updating is delayed. Secondly, page maintenance is done during non-working hours, and other activities can conflict, such as meetings. Thirdly, inputs must be reviewed before the visitors log can be posted for public view. Most postings require no editing. 99% of the time when editing is required, it is to correct a format or spelling error (though we often ignore these). We almost never edit content. Only when inappropriate personal comments are made, or negative comments without redeeming value, will we edit or, in rare and extreme cases, reject a submission. We know a lot of people regularly read the visitors book, and we shall do our best to minimize these delays.

    I will now share with you ARTICLE 7. (TASKS OF THE STATE) from the Constitution of the Republic of Cape Verde

    To quote:

    1.The State shall pursue the following fundamental Tasks:

    a) To defend the independence, to guarantee the unity of the Capeverdean Nation and to promote the social, cultural, economic and political conditions necessary to that effect;

    b) To guarantee the respect for Human Rights and to ensure the full exercise of the fundamental rights and liberties of all citizens;

    c) To guarantee the respect for the republican form of the Government and for the principles of the Democratic State based on the rule of Law;

    d) To guarantee political democracy and democratic participation of all citizens in the organization of political power and in the overall aspect of political and national life;

    e) To promote the well-being and the quality of life of the Capeverdean people, namely of the layers of society more in need, and to remove, progressively, the obstacles of an economic, social, cultural and political nature which impede a real equal opportunity for all citizens;

    f) To promote social solidarity, the autonomous organization of civil society, as well as the individual merit, initiative and creativity;

    g) To support the Capeverdean Community world-wide and to promote in its midst the preservation and the development of the Capeverdean culture;

    h) To foment education, culture, scientific investigation, the dissemination and the utilization of new technologies, as well as the dissemination of the Capeverdean culture in the world;

    i) To create, progressively, the necessary conditions for the transformation and modernization of the economic and social structures, so as to make the economic, social and cultural rights effective;

    J) To protect the landscape, nature, the natural resources and the environment, as well as the historic, cultural and artistic national heritage;

    l) To guarantee the aliens that reside permanently or temporarily in Cape Verde or are in transit in the national territory, a treatment compatible with the international norms of Human Rights and the exercise of rights which are not, constitutionally or by law, reserved to the Capeverdean citizens.

    This is what I wanted to share with all of you because I think it has great meaning to American Caboverdeans and other Caboverdeans outside of Cabo Verde. This is part of the CaboVerdean Costitution. It is writen into Law. I will in the very near future find some other interesting parts of the constitution which we can share with each other. Again I say that any one who wants to get a copy of the Cabo Verdean Constitution should inquire with the Embassy.

    Let me know if you are interested and I will continue.

    Thank you.

    I have a copy of The Constittution of the Republic of Cape Verde which I would like to share with those of you who are interested. I think this is the first time in the History of Cabo Verdean People that we have had such a most important document. I will not add or take away anything. The Constitution speaks for itself. While, in fact, there are many things in the Constitution which may not address or have any direct meaning to people who live outside of Cabo Verde, I have found many issues that have great meaning to Caboverdeans in the diaspora; meaning those who live outside of Cabo Verde.

    I would like to start by quoting an excerpt from a speech given by His Excellency Dr. Amilcar Spencer Lopes who was the Speaker Of The National Assembly of Cabo Verde at the closing ceremony of the Second Extraordinary Legislative Session of the IV Legislature,in 1992, during which the Constitution of the Republic of Cape Verde was adopted.

    " Africa seems to have finally understood that the impulse for its development should emerge from its own soil, and that political democracy is not only the essential condition but also the shortest and the cheapest way towards the economic, social and technological advancement necessary in order to put an end to the regional conflicts and to promote both the dignity and the well-being of the African man.

    " By adopting a constitution in which daring provisions related to matters of fundamental rights, and an uncommon system of Government are enshrined, Cape Verde is exposing itself to the attentive oberservation, not only of the African countries themselves, but also of the International Community which will certainly follow our experience closely.

    " We assume the choice we have made, both with modesty and with firmness, for we believe that by making such a choice, Cape Verde is participating creatively in the building up of Democracy in Africa, as well as in its enhancement, so that it will soon occupy with dignity the place that it belongs within the Concert of Nations."

    I will end the excerpt here. There is much more but that will suffice for know. Any one wanting to read the whole contents should get a copy of the Constitution. Let it be known that His Ecellency Dr.Amilcar Spencer Lopes is now the present Minister Of Foreign Affairs.

    A very good page with a lot of information on scanning for the beginner.

    "B&W printers do NOT print Gray. They use black ink or black toner, and they
    can print only Black. To simulate gray in graphics, they print halftones. With a
    magnifying glass, you can see halftones in the images in any book, magazine or
    newspaper. Halftones are arrays of dots arranged in a grid, say 6x6 or 8x8 to
    represent each image pixel as a shade of Gray. For dark gray, more grid dots
    are black. For light gray, more grid dots are white. (More modern methods used
    for color in magazines vary the size of the dots instead of the ratio of
    light/dark dots.) The printing graphics software and driver can specify
    different halftone grid sizes for different effects. For example, a good laser
    printer might print 600 dpi, or it might print 128 shades of gray, but it cannot
    do both at the same time. If a larger grid is used, more shades of gray are
    possible, but less resolution is possible.

    For example, some grid sizes for a 600 dpi printer are:

    1x1 shows 2 shades (B&W), with image resolution to 600/2 = 300 lpi (LineArt,
    B&W) **
    6x6 shows 37 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/6 = 100 lpi.
    8x8 shows 65 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/8 = 75 lpi.
    10x10 shows 101 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/10 = 60 lpi.

    ** 600 dpi, but it is 300 lpi, because to draw a line, we need at minimum
    alternating black and white pixels, else there is no line. So LineArt could not
    be over 300 lpi on a 600 dpi printer. "

    Click on the URL above to go to Microsoft Expedia Maps Place Finder. Enter the name of a place in Cape Verde in the input field and then click "Go". For example, enter Furna, Cape Verde. Once you've done that, and examined the result (Cool, huh!), then you might try panning right (East)10 clicks and seeing where you are.

    I went to Cape Verde in 1949, living, and nursing in Santa Catarena,
    Brava and Sao Filipe, Fogo. I left Cape Verde in 1960, expecting to
    return. However, health reasons did not allow that.

    I have older friends who may remember me, but even more so Rev. Everette
    and Garnet Howard., who were there from 1936 to 1951.
    God bless you all. You are not forgotten.

    Hello all of my sisters and brothers out there!! I just moved to the Atlanta area and I have been trying to figure out if I am the ONLY Cape Verdean in the State of Georgia!!

    Thanks to the internet, I found out about the 4th annual picnic at Lake Lanier and I will be looking forward to meeting my people there.

    I am was born in Fogo and I am very proud to be Cape Verdean. I moved from Massachusetts a few months ago and until then I did not realize just how much it meant to be in a Cape Verdean neighborhood. I yearn to hear my language being spoken, I crave some down home Cape Verdean Cooking. I would love to hear a car go by playing a Cape Verdean song. These are the things that I miss which I never even gave second thought to when I was around that enviornment.

    If there are any Cape Verdeans in the Atlanta area, I would love to hear from you!!

    To Caboverdeans all over the world,best of heath That is Bon Saude
    Good fortune,Bon Sorte, We are living at a very important time in our history. This is the time we call The Garthering( Kul yetta ). We were forced to leave many of us for many reasons. For 500 years we had to bear the brunt of of colonialism. We know the history of our suffering;
    we were told suffree Ka lar doo. Suffer quitely.
    We must bring all of our good talents to help the development of Cabo Verde. We are today ever so greatful for Dr.AmilCabral and all who participated for our Liberation and independence. We have a great deal of different experience and we are a kaleidoscopic people.
    When we bring all together our (PANO) will be complete. In our unity and Harmony and love for peace (Boa Pas) This is what we mean by the order of Kul yetta. By putting Cabo Verde together is our contribution to all the people of the world. Krung Krung. My last statement is this: Cabo Verde is home but Deus Is third base and you got to touch third base before you go home. DEUS for us means:
    Dialectic- Eclectic-Universal-Science and S also means SALVATION.
    Our Religion is the kindness in your heart and your action of peace and love by the Grace Of DEUS. DEUS ALSO MEANS; DISCIPLINE-
    ENLIGHTENMENT-UNITY-SELFDETERMINATION. THAT IS THE REALITY. " Return to the source" By Dr.Amilcar Cabral.

    To all my beloved Cobo verdeanos

    Perhaps my wisdom is striving towards the problems of injustice in my
    mother land. Yet, I must say that I am not a politic nor that I pretend
    to be one. Though I believe that I am qualified to be one. As as a man
    who is moral, who has this gift unit of God like no other man, I pursue
    the wisdom of reason to acknowledge all the unnecessary soffering of my
    people, by injustice and cruelty by those who claim themselves to be
    democrats which is supposed to be one of the higher plan of justice to
    mankind.

    Thee they learn it from the government they lived under; and related the
    punishments they have been accustomed to behold...the head stuck upon
    spikes, which remained for years upon mother land, differed nothing in
    the horror of the scene from those carried about on spikes at Africa;
    yet this was done by Portuguese.

    It may perhaps be said, that it signifies nothing to a man what is done
    to him after he is dead; but is signifies much to the living, it either
    tortures their feelings, or it hardens their hearts; and in either case,
    it instructs them how to punish when power falls into their hands. Lay
    then the axes to the root, and teach governments humanity. 'Tis their
    sanguinary punishment which corrupt mankind. In my mother land, the
    punishment in most cases are by not being able to have food on the table
    for many unlike few who has too much, not been able to work because you
    are not appationate to their foolishness, immorality and unethical
    government; the heart of the sufferer is cut out and held up to the view
    of the evil eye.

    In Cape Verde, under the former government - Portuguese perhaps fascism -
    the punishment were not less barbarous. Who does not remember the
    execution of brothers mine - one of the most distinguished, Amilcar
    Cabral - the effect of these cruel spectacles exhibited by the few is to
    destroy tenderness, or excite revenge, and by the base and false idea of
    governing men by terror or injustice - based in ignorance, unreasoning,
    immorality - instead of reason, they become precedents.

    Yet, 'tis over the lowest class of mankind that government by terror is
    intended to operate, and 'tis on them that it operates to the worst
    effect, over my brothers and sisters in my lovely mother land. Perhaps
    they have sense enough to feel they are objects aimed at; and they
    inflict in their turn the example at terror they have been instructed to
    practice - by their colonizers Portuguese -.

    Perhaps I must justify that these outrage, immoral ideology of governing
    is not the effect of the principles of DEMOCRACY, but of the degraded
    mind that existed before the Independence, and which the Independence is
    calculated to reform. Place them then to their proper cause, and take
    the reproach to them to your own side.

    My own philosophy into this intricate affair (injustice and monopoly -
    such a type of injustice) it still remains enveloped in all that kind of
    mystery which ever accompanies events produced more from a concurrence
    of awkward circumstances, than from fixed design.

    Yet, I believe that at this point of my reasoning, the characters of
    men are forming, as is always the case in Independence, there is a
    reciprocal suspicion, and a disposition to misinterpret each other; and
    even parties directly opposite in principle, will sometimes concur in
    pushing forward the same movement with very different views, and with
    the hope of its producing very different consequences (you may think
    that this hole argument is hard to understand or even not well
    written...use your brain).

    Perhaps I must inform my fellows Cape Verdean that, this type of so
    called democracy is inherent in a world composed of political entities
    at radically different stages of economic and technological development;
    the powerful are always tempted to dominate the weak - these "democrats"
    demon, evil believe that they are controlling uma 'cural' the pessoas who
    doesn't have any knowledge or even are able to feel). Yet power
    disparities only make injustice possible, however, not necessary.

    Any moral evaluation of this so called democracy must be sensitive to
    changing historical circumstances. According to contemporary standards
    of international behavior, injustice is inexcusable because it conflicts
    directly with the rights of national sovereignty and self-determination
    - for those ignorance back home, who seams to have ho clue what
    injustice means, and if they do, therefore they are immoral -. Such
    rights, have only recently been recognized as applicable worldwide,
    except in Cape Verde.

    After all, I believe that, this is one of the best way to express our
    wisdom and love toward our brothers and sister in our mother land. Lets
    work hard by using our knowledge and reasoning, for our country; lets
    bring the ideology of our hero and brothers Amilcar Cabral, Aristides
    Pereira and others to its higher plan of wisdom, morality and justice to
    all and for all.

    To all Cabo Verdeanos...
    Lovely Yours,
    Antonio S. Gomes

    Hello to all my Cape Verdean brothers and sisters out there! I live in Missouri now, but I'm from New B. I'm wondering if there are any "Centeios" in other parts of the country and beyond whose families are from the island of Brava?? I really want to get in touch and trace my family's roots back to Cabo Verde. Write back on this site if you have any info...thanks! Love and peace to all of you...

    Caros Amigos:
    Sou estudante de arquitetura da Universidade Federal Fluminense aqui do Rio de Janeiro e conheci alguns Caboverdeanos.Desde entao tenho tido uma curiosidade muito grande em relacao a este povo que eh um povo irmao ao nosso.
    Notei que eles mantinham algum contato com a cultura brasileira, e fiquei um pouco envergonhado de nao saber a principio absolutamente sobre o seu pais.
    Gostaria de elogiar a excelente pagina e se possivel solicitar algum endereco de chat para poder conversar com alguem de Cabo Verde para que possamos aprender um pouco mais sobre nossas culturas.

    This home page is excellent and I enjoy it very much.
    I am looking for Shannon Sinclair who sent a note to the visitors log
    in early April, indicating that she was going to Cape Verde as a Peace
    Corps volunteer to teach English. The e-mail address appeared to be
    incomplete and I was was not able to respond directly. My daughter
    is there now, completing her second year as a volunteer and she will
    be working training with the new group of volunteers arriving this
    summer. I would like to be able to answer some questions for
    Ms.Sinclair if she e-mail me.
    I had a wonderful time visiting in Cape Verde last summer.
    The people are so friendly!

    Pede as minhas sinceras desculpas porque por um lapso meu, este comentario nao ficou completo na primeira.
    O MPD sabe e muito bem que o PAICV expulsou das suas fileiras pessoas com a mentalidade "TROCKSISTAS" e que essas mesmas
    pessoas foram acolhidas com agrado pelo o MPD, TORNANDO-LHES pessoas de estrelas como por exemplo:- o ex-
    embaixador de C.VERDE EM Portugal. Portanto com a justica quem o faz e o POVO, este mesmo povo e que vai dizer afinal quem e ESTALINISTA se e o PAICV ou MPD.as vezes e melhor calar do que falar asneiras, porque nos nos EUA e muito bem informada, e que sabe fazer politica, e quem que provar e so dar umas voltas na terra do tio SAN e podemos entao dar umas aulas sobre a DEMOCRACIA
    Q
    Quanto aos outros titulos fica para outra ocasiao, e ademais ja e do conhecimento publico nacional e internacional o que se passou com os SINDICALISTAS E JPORNALISTAS, so que pede a DEUS para
    que a nossa terra nao seja uma INDONESIA encravada na AFRICA.
    Por isso diga-vos : eles mesma empregaram uma frase na sua revista
    afinal somos ou nao somos uma republica de bananas?

I've been here for 6 years now and would like to meet some cape verdeans here.

    Bom Dia, fellow Capeverdeans/C.V. Supporters!

    Does any one know of any Cape Verdean who served in the 2nd world war as a Buffalo Soldier? I would like to interview those who served in the 92nd Division. There is one gentleman here in Taunton, a friend of my Mom's who has told me great stories of both comeraderie as well as racial injustice and the complexities of being "Criolu" in the 40's and 50's. It would be a great story, not only for this internet page, but for Cimboa Magazine which is published out of the Cape Verdean Consulate on Boston (it's a Journal of Arts and Letters, published quarterly, for those who haven't yet seen it, you're missing a great literary experience--with articles printed in Portuguese, some English, and even some Criolu! I have subscription cards for anyone who wants one!) I am told that the Infantry Combat team numbers were 365, 370, and 371. If anyone knows of a Buffalo Soldier who would be willing to talk to me and possibly be video-tapped for a future documentary/educational piece, please e-mail me at bburgo@aol.com. I am a middle-aged Cape Verdean woman who is a Junior at Rhode Island College majoring in Anthropology, with a major concentration on Cape Verde. Obrigada!!

    Secondly, I went to Cape Verde last summer to study with the URI/RIC Seminar in Cape Verde and, with one month's research, only scratched the surface of so many interesting subjects!! I'm going back this year with two or three other students who attended last year's class-BUT, as you might guess money will be a deciding factor for some of us!! Does anyone know of research opportunities, scholarships OR Philanthropic organizations/persons who might be interested in sponsoring/supporting current research in Cape Verde? We're only looking for 2,000 - 3,000 dollars to help defray costs. We've each saved 1/2 of the $3,200 fee. (two of us have all the $'s two, still looking). ANy suggestions, guidance, opportunities to assist us in this important research would be greatly appreciated. Deus Ba Ku Bo!

    Just ringin' in for the month of May. Nothing much to say this month.

    I wish the best of luck to all the recent college graduates. I hope that each one of you finds the job that you want; at the rate of pay you seek; in the location where you want to be. If you are less fortunate, and are finding it difficult to connect, remember one thing: you have more salable skills than you think you have.

    Buy that "Dress for Succes" suit; get a "square" haircut/hairdo; and go on some interviews that you think you are not interested in. Job-hunting is an art form. The more you do, the better you get. After each interview, go somewhere and sit down with your notebook [preferably a spiral binder]. Critique your interview.
    Guys, buy a decent pair of lace-up shoes, get a good shoe shine; and shave clean, if you are not already clean shaven.
    " Tailor" your resume to the position you seek every time you apply for a new position. You don't buy " fresh" clothes on a on-size-fits-all basis. Why fool yourself into thinking that one resume will meet all your job-seeking needs?
    Each of you is unique. "Tailor" your resume to identify that uniqueness. Somebody out there is looking for YOU.
    If all else fails, invest in a book called "WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE, 1998?" If you are a serious jobseeker, treat this book as a New Lover. Take it to bed with you. Learn all of its hidden secrets. Learn what about it turns you on. Explore it! Caress it! Sound foolish or absurd. NO, it is not. Unless you are singularly blesssed, this book will REVOLUTIONIZE the way that you job-hunt. It will make you a sophisticated job hunter. Remember,
    the job does not always go to the best qualified person. The job USUALLY goes to the person with the BEST job-hunting skills.

    GO FOR IT CLASS OF 1998.

    CRIOULOS E TUDO TRABADGADOUROS; E SOU TRABADGO QUI NOS
    TUDO MESTE.
    GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU.

    Your Detroit Cape Verdean Connection
    Ernie Costa

    I`m new at this computer thing so I havn`t any idea what my URL is if
    I even have one. I have very little knowledge on your country even thou
    I am 60 years old now. I guess I was more interested in those country`s
    that I collected ;originally stamps and then went into coins. I worked for a
    for a railroad for most of my life so I just didn`t get around too much.
    I did listen to short wave for most of my life but I`ve never heard
    your country in English and I don`t speak any other language.
    The reason I ended up here is because of your volcano,when I was researching volcano`s
    on the volcano net. Yes I would like to more about your country and
    even go there before I die but I can`t even think about coming there
    for 2 years so it will have to be by computer. So either write to me
    by mail or by computer I will answer you as soon as I can in english.,
    which is about every two to three days if not sooner. By the way do
    you have any railroads or trains or trollys in your country?
    Hope to here from you soon
    Yours Paul Williams

    I used to pass Cape Verde on many occasions when I was an engineer with Elder Dempster Lines.UK and Africa.
    I always wondered what they were like,I was told then(1963)that they were bleak and inhospitable(just a lump on the horizon to me)but I was curious and always wished I could stop and have a look.How many islands are there?
    I do now know a little more.Many thanks and good luck
    Regards
