Verdean with some news: If you are in the New England area-especially Rhode
Island-come celebrate CV Independence day at India Point in Providence, RI.
It is usually held on the Sunday after the fourth of July Weekend from about
noon til ???. Thousands of Cape Verdeans come to enjoy creole food, music,
arts and crafts booths and buy T-shirts and other souveigners with our CV
Flag on them. The Ernestina (a Cape Verdean merchant ship) docks at India
Point every year and allows visitors to board and check it out. Join us-it's

I'm as black as you can get. It has become apparent to myself
and others that when you attempt to claim your blackness, some
individuals cannot accept it. Well, I'll continue to do so,
not as a way to get attention from some, but simply to claim
that as Africans we need to love only our people and where we
come from. No Capeverdean needs to feel any sort of attachment
with Portugal and its people; You really don't have to do that.
Remeber you history and how much they oppressed us. If it
wasn't for Amilcar Cabral and a couple of other brave black
individuals, we would still be slaves. Portuguese folks didn't
and won't hand anything to us for free. Whatever we get as a
people, we must fight for it/them. They don't and they will
never love us. DON'T EVER FORGET THE PAST BECAUSE THE STRUGGLE

Hello Everybody, I know the name Pemberton is British due tho the fact that my father was from St. Kitts, Leward Isle W.I., however, my dear mother was from Lisboa, Portugal and came here with family as a little girl. My father on the other hand came to this country via London, Eng., Canada, then to New York. Met my mother during the war, he was repairing ship for the govt. and was stationed in Newport, R.I. and ran into my mother in Fall River, MA and instantly fell in love. Not being of the Portugese tongue he forbid it to be spoken when during the fest of St. Anthony and my aunts and uncles were at our home speaking only in Portugese and in a rage he shouted, " no more Portugese only English spoken here" so I never hung on to the language and lost most of the tongue. So to my good friend John Pinto who informed me of this site, thank you.I understand that the name Pemberton is linked to Royality in St. Kitts...

It has been my great honor to teach this year in the Cape
Verdean Bilingual Program at the Jeremiah Burke High School
in Dorchester with such excellent Cape Verdean teachers as
Amilcar Silva, Ambrizeth Lima, Ligia Fontes, John DeJesus,
Antonio Centeio, Isabel Fontes, Ernestina Almeida, Annie
DeBarros, Apolinario Barros and Manuel Goncalves. We are
proud to have sent many of our graduating Cape Verdean
seniors on to American universities with high hopes of
continued academic success.
After my first year teaching at the Burke, I am very much
looking forward to returning to Cape Verde in July for a

My brother Ed, has retired and moved to Cape Verde. He lives on the island of Maio and in the village of Maio where he rents a room while building himself a domicile about seven miles out of town. He moved there from Tucson, Arizona because of the similiar climate conditions. He wants to develop ways to get fresh water to the local population by both inexpensive desalination, and by holding on to what little rainfall they get. While he is not aware that I am writing this, He might welcome any ideas or comments anyone might have regarding these topics. He is not on the Net.

Hi Richard,
It was good to see you and all those who attended the reception for the Mayor of Fogo yesterday at the Onset VFW.I brought my 12 year old niece and my next door neighbor's
son who is 11 because they have both shown great interest
in learning more about our culture. The boy, who's mom is
white and dad is Cape Verdean wants to learn to speak Criolu
as well as study as much about his CV ancestry as he can.
He asked the Mayor for an autograph yesterday and plans to
laminate the program that the Mayor signed in order to
preserve it when he takes it to school to show his friends.My niece almost brought tears of joy to my eyes when, as we
were driving her home said Thank you to me and said "It's
cool to be Cape Verdean." (I helped her prepare a presentation for her class last year on Cape Verde to which
the teacher and several students remarked that they had
never heard of Cape Verde but now want to visit the islands.The pride continues and grows. Thanks to all who contribute to our cultural awareness and the increased pride of our

Hi Fellow Caboverdianos:I'm preparing to attend the summer abroad program in Cape Verde with URI, RIC, Antioch students and Dr. Lobban/Dr. Monteiro. We'll be there during the month of July. Any suggestions? Helpful hints? Please feel free to share them with me. I'll be researching women's accomplishments from the year 1900 to 2000. Know anyone who would like to be interviewed?
