It wasn't until I moved to New York that I truly started feeling the expansiveness and deepness of our diaspora. I was born and raised in Rhode Island and both my parents are from Brava. My mother's family (Barbosa/Rodrigues) live primarily in the Boston area and my father's family (Tavares/Rodrigues) are scattered around Rhode Island and Southeastern Mass. Thanks to all who have created a web page busting with pride, hope, and love. Even though here in New York I am surrounded by a crazy amount of "creole" cultures, I'm still feeling the sodade. If it becomes one way back track to Gano street and take a left
you will end up on Wickenden St. go down Wickenden, past the Stop sign and at the second light take a left.
Go to the end of the street and take another left the park wil then be on your right.
(If you park on Wickenden St. near the school, at the top of Wickenden, there is a bridge, cross that into the park (nice view)

Hello fellow Cabo's,

Since we have internet at our work (this company exists now for only 1 1/2 year) I have visited the Cabo site twice. Now I have found you guys! I read many of your messages and found out that many of you haven't visited Cabo Verde yet and do not even know the names of their grand parents!

My parents left Cabo Verde in the seventies and went off to Paris. My father worked at see and my mother worked at people's homes.They lived there for 5 years and there was I (1974). When I was only 1 year old we went together to Holland. After two years my sweet sister was born.

Let me tell you: I have visited Cabo Verde three times and it is so beautiful! Especially, when the mayor part of the village is your family! (Ribera Grande, Santo Antao). I have seen my grand parents three times - 2 of them I have seen twice and unfortunately the father of my father died when my father was only 3 months old.

I have made so many pictures from the country side the third time I was there. One island named Sal is fantastic. Well, the beach is.
The mayor part is only sand and there's almost no light when it turns dark. St. Vicent is the island of trade. There are a few nice clubs and there all the students go to school when they are not planning to go to Portugal/Brasil/USA or somewhere else. St. Antao is one of the greenest islands. This is really a paradise. Doing almost nothing during the day and going to the club of a nephew and dance! fantastic.

I am adopted and recently found out that my birthfather, who is deceased, was Cape Verdean. I'm just writing a quick response to Ms. Toni D. Green's question about
the talsiman/pendant her mom wears around the neck. I just wanted to
know if it is a black sphere with white dots. If it is, (I gave a mini-
report on this in one of my African art classes) it's called a "Kont
di Oj", and it is traditionally worn as an amulet to keep away the
evil eye or evil doings from witches/feiticeiras. Traditionally
(and up to the present day, in some cases) in Cape Verde,
babies have one of these beads looped thru a string around their waists,
where no one can see it. THis is supposed to guarantee the protection
of the child, especially if she or he is 'sperto' or extremely brite.
Apparently, a precocious child has a higher chance of being cursed
by a witch. Anyway, for optimum effectiveness, no one is supposed to
see that you own a "Kont di Oj" -- that way its power can 'nuetralize'
whatever spell was placed on you. Anyway, this is what my mother told
me when I interviewed her. She had no idea where this bead/ritual
originated from: could be somewhere in Africa or Portugal, possibly
even Moorish. Regardless,it seems that Cape Verdeans have adopted
this amulet as an identifying icon. In the Cape Verdean diaspora and
in the Islands themselves, "Kont di Oj" can be seen as charms worn
on gold hoop earrings and necklaces.. I'm interested in finding out
if Ms. Greens's amulet was what I described, or was I just running
my mouth for nothing? :)

Agora, eu gostaria de elogiar o CD de Manuel Rodrigues, que pôs uma mensagem nesta página. Vale a pena comprá-lo. Regarding the query about the amulet, we can provide some illumination, but will defer for now to those in Cabo Verde who have far more knowledge of this subject. Yo, This is Snookie from Brooklyn! I wanna give a Shoutout to all my Cabos all over the world! I'm like the only one in my neighborhood and I'm feeling kinda lonely. I was born in Brockton, MA, but we moved as soon as that happened. My parents are from Praia & Mindelo. They too are glad to see that something's being done for us Cabos. I know a few in NY that like to lie and claim that they're Puerto Rican. May the future bring prosperity for all of us!

The question that is quietly being ask in the Cabo verdean community in cabo verdean circles,is why they can not have a Cabo Verdean Preist at the O.L.O.A. Catholic Church? We understand that a non Cabo verdean is being sent to Cabo Verde to learn the Cabo Verdean Culture. Many Cabo verdeans both Catholic and non Catholic take a quiet offence to such an idea. What is the problem do we not have any Cabo Verdean priest? We think that it would be great for our children to have a Cabo verdean preist as a role model of Christ.
O.L.O.A. since 1902 the first Caboverdean Catholic Church in the U.S.A. has been a pillar of beauty and strenght for all these years, only once for a very short period we had Father Martin Gomes a American born preist at O.L.O.A. We of the Cabo verdean community
at large would pray that Christ would send us a Cabo verdean priest.
We do have a very wonderful Holy Bishop who is Caboverdean in Cabo verde;that is His excellency Bishop Evora. We Cabo verdeans pray to Deus that we will have a Cabo Verdean priest, we do have a wonderful Italian priest at St.Patricks in Boston,and he is so loved by the people of Cabo verde that he is called a HONORARY Caboverdean which is well deserved for all the good spiritual work he has done in Caboverde for 40 years and all the good work he has done to promote Christ and Cabo verde. Now we are asking for a son of Cabo verde to be the head of Christu at the O.L.O.A. We hope that in the love and honesty and the Grace of Christu we can have one.
