We just came back from a month in the Cape Verde Islands where we
did reseach concerning the health care system and traditional
medicine in the islands, through a program offered by URI and
RIC. This experiece was, well, all we can say is that we are
ready to relocate there. The people are extremely friendly and
willing to assist in any way possible. Considering it was an
intensive academic program, there was still time to experience
the culture and learn to "FUNANA". Our group visited the
following islands:Santiago, Sal, Sao Vicente, Brava, Santo

What a beautiful sight great job! I'm currently plan to go
to Capeverde soon and plan on bringing wheelchairs for some of
the handicap people that I came across on my last trip through
the Capeverde Islands.Through the Capeverdean association of Brockton MA,USA
A non profit organization which I am the vice president of we have

ILDO LOBO, CESARIA, BANA: CHILDREN OF THE ISLANDS
This past weekend, CapeVerdeans from Connecticut and many others from
the Massachusetts area as well, were part of a "community effort" to
bring about more unity and feeling of "togetherness". Being that
I don't get to spend "quality" time with "my people", I decided
to be part of the festival. Upon arriving at the CapeVerdean
club, I notice something I've been pondering upon a great deal
(which not only made me very sad but somewhat angry) over: The facts
are not encouraging and at times disturbing to many of us, young/old.
We are loosing a big part of our culture and tradition; I'm afraid
that my kids and grand-kids as well will not enjoy the beautiful melodies
of Bana, Cesaria, Tito Paris, Paulino Evora, Gardenia, Ildo Lobo, etc.
These artists define who we are as a people: A mixture of cultures, composed
of very good and simple people, and their music clearly traslates
these aspects. Although I'm only 21, I feel this part of our heritage
being lost in the times and destroyed by the winds of change and
modernity. CapeVerdean-American kids are choosing the likes of
R&B artists such as Jodeci, R. Kelly, rappers KRS-1, Nas, and others
over our "local" but yet very talented group of artists. Change is good
but does it justify loosing what is very much dear and prescious to us???
Something needs to be done, someone needs to take charge. Individuals need
to learn that being CapeVerdean has nothing to do with associating thyself
with certain kids of behavior and people; Going to clubs no longer provides
a young CapeVerdean with an opportunity to listen to good music and a chance
to learn a great deal about our culture. Ahhhhhhhhh, it hurts to see it
all go down the pact of destruction. Why the Zouk, why young Capverdean
teenagers rapping, why nasty dances??? Why have we become so "dirty" and
simple minded. We are simple people, our parents came to America seeking
better life for us, never knowing that in the process they were sacrificing
the very little which we have and makes us all something special: Ten samall
islands in the middle of nowhere. Now I want to know who is a "TRUE CAPEVERDEAN".

My husbands family is Cape Verdean. I'm so glad to see a
web site for us.
St. Helena. He was a whaler and the First Mate on the 34th
voyage of the Charles W. Morgan, a Whaling Ship now docked
in Mystic, CT. at Mystic Seaport. In 1917 to 1918 the Morgan
sailed from New Bedford to the Island of St. Vincent in the
Cape Verdes, after staying there a few days they sailed to
Brava making some minor repairs. Then to Desolation Island
where they ran into bad weather and 4 men were lost.
First Mate John Domingo Lopes saved his boat from
capsizing and 2 of the men from the capsized boat,
James Burgo and Third Mate Walter Thompson, by pulling
them out of the sea.
For more information on this great heritage of ours, read
"The Charles W. Morgan" The Last Wooden Whaleship
by Edouard A. Stackpole, "The Charles W. Morgan" by John F.
Leavitt, "Whale Hunt, The narrative of a Voyage by Nelson
Cole Haley Harpooner in the Ship Charles W. Morgan 1849-1853.
These stories should be passed on to our children.

Very nice page with lots of informations. I am very impressed by the amount of information available on net about the Cape Verde Islands. As a part of my wifes family descends from the islands, i would very much like to go there. Currently I am researching into various danish connections to the islands, past present and future, for a possible film projekt. I am particularly interested in information on slave trade to the (at that time) danish Virgin Islands (the Danish West Indies).

I also attended Brockton High School. I graduated from there. I see you made it to the fight of the "DECADE". I was there also. I worked the fight. I do fight and concerts at the MGM part time.
