Just wanted to let you know there is a new Cape Verdean Club in Boston on Friday nights from 9PM until 2AM. It is located at Club Enzo in the Days Inn Boston on 1234 Soldier's Field Road. The back entrance is on Western Ave which is off of Mass Avenue. During the month of September Ladies get in free all night, there is a cash prize for the sharpest dressed lady, there will also be free finger foods. It is $8.00 for Gentlemen before midnight. This is an absolute 21+ event with no exceptions to the rule. Also there are no jeans, sneakers, T-shirts, baseball caps (appropriate dress only). The club is very close and accessible to Dorchester and Roxbury. Take Mass Ave until you get to Central Square. Pass the set of lights after the Foot Locker until you reach the next set of lights. Take a left at this set of lights onto Pleasant Street. Go to the end of Pleasant Street and take a right onto Western Ave. Follow western Ave. for about five minutes and then you will see The Days Inn on the right side across from Caldors, Bed and Bath etc. There is plenty of free parking at the Hotel, the MDC next store and at the park right in front of the hotel. I was very surprised and pleased to see that there is information on Cape Verde and Cape Verdeans on the web. I'm constantly asked if i'm Puerto Rican when i show my picture on AOL and when i tell them i'm Cape Verdean....they dont know what it is. Read a magazine called FRAGATA,published by TACV-CABO AIRLINES,it is smooth and the best thing I have seen put out by any Caboverdeans. Great pictures great stories in both English and Portuguese. I want to thank the editor Luis Carvaho for such a very informative magazine. It is the Caboverdeans Ebony but even better.
I would like to know how we can purchase this mgazine. I have the issue called Santiago #10 January 1996;giving to me by Neves Travel agency in New Bedford. Hi!
Great site!I plan to visit cabo verde for the first time in Nov. Can anyone help

I just want to say, "hello" an dto give you some information about a documentary film project I am working on about Cape Verdeans. The project is entitled, Between Survival and Memory: The Cabo Verdiano Struggle in New England. This is the first productionof Gomes de Bellém Productions, an educational conduit intended to preserve an dmaintain the Cabo Verdiano cultural experience through the use of video, film and music and to broaden th public awareness about the Cabo Verdiano culture through the the use of visual media. The documentary uses a community in Wareham, MA as one of the focal points of the story. The Wareham community is used to recount the story of early Cabo Verdiano immigrants to the United States, to document their history in the Cape Cod area, and to portray their descendant's quest to maintain their identity. The film incorporates interviews from four generations of Cabo Verdianos to tell the story. The documentary also looks at the Boston community of newer immigrants. The documtary is about 25% completed, but there is a lot more to be done. There will be a special fundraiser this Friday, August 28, 1998 from 9PM until 2AM at Club Enzo in the Days Inn Boston 1234 Soldier's Field Road, Boston. Music will be provide by CV Joint Productions of the new hit CD Infancia. They will provide the best in Cabo Verdiano and island music. I am so glad to see that mamny Cape Verdeans in the U.S are returning to our Motherland, Cabo Verde to visit. I encourage you. I have been several times and each time gets better. The first time was amazing and it is one of the best things I have done in my life. I got to meet family, see places that I always heard about and see exactly where many of our traditions came from. I am searching for more members of my family. Can someone out there help me? My great grandmother (Joaninya Deyha Rosa Dominga) is from Sao Nicolau, she gave birth to 8 daughters. My grandmother Joanna Britto is one of the youngest of the daughters - born January 1, 1894 in the village of Calijone (I do not have the proper spelling-it is pronounced: Kaaleejone). She came to the USA by way of Ellis, Island in New York. She settled in Marion, MASS (the Cape Cod area) with other relatives and friends working the cranberry fields. She then went and stayed in Newport, Rhode Island until her death January 20, 1967. She was married to Simplicio Lopes Moreino (born in Praia on March 2, 1888 and died in Newport, RI, November 19, 1960). Joanna had 10 children (her first son John Fontino was born in the Cape Verde and she sent for him when he was 8 yrs old). My mother Maria de Gracia Moreino was born in Newport, RI in November 1930 she is the youngest of the ten children. She was about 10 years old when John Fontino gave her a hug and left home for good - he did not get along with his step father Simplicio) John never returned or kept in touch with the family. In Sept of 1997 I stayed in Ribera Brava, Sao Nicolau,(In Agua Da Spota I met Maria Gomes and Hippolito Barretta Gomes: Familia Cundinia) I had asked a ticket agent if she heard of Raquel and Alena Olivera. I know that Raquel is an airline steward and married to a doctor (name unknown) and I know that their mother Bia used to have a shop at the airport - she has passed away since. The woman explained to me that the family lives in Sao Vicente but she did not have any address or tele number. I never did get a chance to go to Soa Vincente. This December I will be returning to Agua Da Spota and I am hoping to get in contact with the family in Soa Vincente. I hope someone can help me. Please!

I went to the Cape Verde in Sept of '97. I always dreamed of visiting the country of my grandparents. My grandmother (Joanna D'Brit) came from Sao Nicolau and my grandfather (Simplicio Moreino) came from Praia during the late 1800's by way of Ellis Island in New York. Both have passed away since. I was fortunate to have a mother and aunts that passed on stories of family and culture to the young. To anyone that is interested in looking for family - I suggest to you to just get on the plane and visit. It is not only wonderful to see the beautiful mountains of Sao Nicolau and the coastline but the people are very peaceful and they welcome you as familia. I do not speak Criuolo but I was fortunate to meet Joao and Isabelle (Amita) Lima during a trip to the bank. They had returned to Praia to build a hotel in Canise. In an instant Amita taught me the currency, took me to the open market to shop for groceries and educated me about life in Cape Verde. I also had the pleasure of being their guest in their home. From there I went onto Sao Nicolau - the day I arrived a taxi driver took me to Agua Da Spata, as I walked upward of the mountain I asked for Familia Cundinia. It was like winning the lottery. I met extended family members - I also had the pleasure of someone volunteering their time to translate. Unfortunately, I did not find everyone that I hoped to find. I would like to get in contact with more family. If you have any connections to familia Cundinia or the Oliviera family in Sao Tome please write to me!

Great web-site. I enjoyed reading the insightful articles and viewing the beautiful pictures. I organized a tour at the Museum of Fine Arts, where I work, for the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde's wife Madame Maria Almeida. Susequently, I attended a dinner on Fri. 8/7/98 and a banquet on Sat. 8/8/98 in their honor. What a wonderful experience meeting them and hearing the Prime Minister's speach. I hope to visit he islands in the year 2000 with some of my family members. It will be the first time for all of us. My father's family is originally from Sao Nicolau and my mother's from Brava and Fogo. I would like to recommend all the CV's from Rhode Island to go see the film "O Testamento do Senhor Napomucemo". This film is based on a CV novel and will be played August 7-13 in Avon theater in Thayer Street, Providence. It's a great movie. Boston Globe gave 3 1/2 stars.

My wife and I went to the Cape Verdeans of California Independence celebration held in Oakland. We had a wonderful time as well as everyone else in attendance.

I would like to start a Seattle chapter of the Cape Verdean West Association. If there are any Cape Verdeans in the seattle area please contact me at the e-mail address provided. Hey Amigos,

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. I have gotten behind on a number of things - email, some announcements, getting a car, .... Please forgive me. I hope to get to all this asap. Though if I disappear for two weeks, don't be surprised! The goal is to catch up pretty much by September, and to introduce a better front page and index pronto. We do hope that with the start of the new school year, a few more academics and educators out there will join with us, and/or move out on their own, with some CV cyberspace initiatives. There is no reason we should not be seeing more classrooms as well as individual students online. Put a project team together. Assign a student(s) a project, or let the student(s) propose one.

Everybody does not need to be a computer coding specialist. Some stidents can produce pictures. Or take photos. Or write. Or manage the project. There's a place for everybody on computer/web projects. I've heard from a few teachers out there who are excited and enthusiastic about projects involving the Internet and the web. Let's get ready to roll in September, and launch a full-scale CV educational/exploratory/experimental offensive in cyberspace. Remember, this home page is just one part of CV cyberspace. Decentralization and empowerment is the name of the game.

I hear students and teachers say they'd love to do it but they don't have time. I think that "cyberspace" activity - i.e., learning about and using computers, the Internet, the Web - is not something the student does apart from or in addition to his/her regular work. It should be an integral part of the curriculum and the pedagogical approach. If it is not, the students are in the process of being economically and culturally marginalized.

Where schools don't have computers or don't utilize them effectively, that's an unsatisfactory situation and something should be done about it.

Computers are not the most important things in life. Or the most important things in schools. Then again, neither is a book, or a pencil. But education and learning is very important, and so is having the necessary tools to prepare for the world of today, and tomorrow. And we are not talking about training people to be cogs in a machine.

As an example, we hear a lot about Amilcar Cabral, but NONE of his writings, speeches, etc. are available online. We never hear any discussions of his ideas. If a student or students were to address this, it could be very rewarding activity, certainly a significant contribution. You'd have to be research copyright laws. You'd have take pains to make sure transcriptions were error-free. Could be a lot of work. But people would be able to read Cabral in his own words, to be exposed to the ideas of this great man, to be able to analyze, discuss, and critique his ideas. Maybe a few students at different schools could get together online, figure out how to attack this challenge, divide up the job. Everybody does a little piece. A cyberspatial barn-raising. Cybernetic djuntamao!

My Grandfather was from Cape Verde and I wanted to find out more about
him and his country. Unfortunately, I had sent for some information
several years ago to no avail. I corresponded regularly with the
the Cape Verde Consulate attempting to get my grandfather's birth
records. I requested his information, sent the appropriate fee and
called often for over 5 years awaiting for a response. I was
guaranteed a response, but received none. If there is any way I
could get this information or put in contact with someone who
could, both me and my grandfather's 100+ descendents would be
extremely grateful.
