Cruising to Martha's Vineyard yesterday, aboard the Shamonchi
out of New Bedford, it was great to see the Schooner Ernestina
in full sail out in Buzzard's Bay. The Ernestina was a gift of 
the Republic of Cape Verde to the United States and is a 
living symbol of the ties of friendship uniting the two 
countries.

Thanks Barbara, Jeanine, and Nino for a great day. The
weatherman and I were just wrong. It was the perfect early 
fall day. Buzzard's Bay and Vineyard Sound were like a lake. 
In Oak Bluffs, people like myself are still trying for the 
brass ring at the carousel, and the gingerbread cottages and 
the Tabernacle are still there, as they hopefully always 
will be.

Beth, we missed you.

    I was born and raised in the Fox Point section of Providence RI.  
Fox Point is one of the oldest Cape Verdean Communities in the USA.  
I grew up in the Sheldon Street Congrregational Church. Sheldon 
Stret was the FIRST church ever built in the USA for the exclusive 
use of Cape Verdeans.  We were a mission that the Central 
Congregational Church started in 1885.  Central Congregational 
Church built the church as a mission, at 51Sheldon Street [in 
Fox Point] in 1905. The Sheldon Street Church still stands at 
51 Sheldon Street.  It is no longer excusively Cape  Verdean, 
but it is still a vibrant GROWING church. 

Today, I live in Detroit, MI.  I am a(n):
     -  active senior citizen
     -  Detroit Public Schools administrator
     -  Adjunct Prpofessor at Wayne State University (Criminal Justice);
     - Associate Minister at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church 
on the East Side of Detroit .

Greeting to my friends from Cape Verde. Having visited your beautiful 
islands fours times now, I almost feel at home when I go back there.
After my first couple of visits to the islands I thought it a shame 
that almost no-one in the UK knows where you are.  Over the last year 
or so I have been putting together some small and very select holidays 
to Cape Verde and have even set up my owm company entiled Cape Verde 
Travel. TACV airlines have been very helpful in organising this and I 
would like to thank them both for their support and excellent service

I have been following the developments of Capeverdeans willingness to reach out to each other. The willingnes of reaching out to each other is ours very special!!!

Please check out our 8/26 posting to the VLog where we
addressed some of your questions. To reiterate and amplify,
no, there is no routine to provide such information to the
numerous people who send messages to the VLog asking for it. We
fully understand the need and the opportunity, and we have
directed a number of messages to appropriate parties
regarding this issue.

In a 9/20 posting to the VLog, Uwe from Germany makes a
cautionary note regarding tourism. As has been demonstrated
throughout the world, if not properly implemented and managed,
tourism can have a very negative effect on a country's
lands, ecosystem, people and culture. This is a global issue,
and it is especially important and critical for countries
such as Cape Verde. This is an issue that
we hope is being adequately discussed and addressed in CV

QUESTIONS ANSWERED?

This is surely a unique and important site for cape verdeans,
potential tourists, investors, scholars and others. Many
entries contain questions about a variety of topics (travelling
language, history, etc). At times, I have sent e-mail messages
trying to answer these questions. However, I am wondering
whether there is any routine for this. For instance, is
anybody mailing anything to all those requesting information
on travelling to/in Cape Verde? This would be a cheap and targetted
way of promoting tourism.

So, is anybody already doing this, or should we all make an effort
to answer some of the questions asked by the people who sign?

Prime Minister of Cape Verde to Visit UMass Boston


 BOSTON - Dr. Carlos Veiga, prime minister of the Republic of Cape Verde,
will speak at the University of Massachusetts Boston on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
in the Faculty Dining Hall, 11th floor, Healey Library. The event is open to
the public.

 Veiga will speak on the status of Africa as an emerging internationalized
economy and the key role of Cape Verde in helping to shape this marketplace
as it moves toward the new millennium.

 Cape Verde, off the coast of western Africa, is made of up of 10 islands
and eight islets. Despite its small population of 390,000 people, Cape Verde
has played a major role in African affairs, particularly with Portugal and
its former African colonies.

 The largest population of Cape Verdeans not living in Cape Verde reside in
Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

 Veiga's visit is sponsored by the William Monroe Trotter Institute. For

when i came back there, i've seen some photo of Sal and the other cabo verde's islands

I have been in Atlanta for three weeks now and I am feening

chiken flavored sprite, chicken fingers and toes ..... basically

Hello again Cape Verdeans around the world. I just got back from
a 9 week vacation that took me to Lisbon,Coimbra, Sal, Sao Vicente,
and Santo Antao. To say the least, it was an amazing experience.
Some of you may already know me from the contacts we had last school year,
but for those of you who do not know me let me introduce myself.
I am a Cape Verdean from the island of Sao Vicente that has been
living in Philadelphia since I was 11 years old. In 1992 I
graduated from Temple University and now I am teaching Spanish
at a small middle school called Hill-Freedman. Last year I
organized a Mentally Gifted program that taught 9 students
about the Cape Verdean Culture. Thanks to this web page, I was
able to establish contacts between Cape Verdeans and other
people interested in the Cape Verdean culture w/ my students in the MG
program. Well, this year my students and I are going to take our
program to the next level. I kept a video, picture, and written journal of my
experiences in Cape Verde and we will be developing The Hill-
Freedman School Web Page... If anyone is interested in sharing
information w/ my students (family history, personal experiences

It's been a while since I last left a message here.
I would like to put a few thoughts to all Capeverdeans
out there in Internet Land.
Be aware that our country is in need.  This is a fact.
We are in need of young intellectuals, young politicians,
young men/women of trade, and young people with college
degrees.  Some of us have left our mother-land for
different reasons.  But let us not say "They don't need me, 
let them fend for themselves, I'm in America now!!!"  We
are Capeverdeans first and foremost.  Let us not fool 
ourselves that we are Portuguese, Americans, Dutch, or
whatever.  Why should we call ourselves Americans,
Portuguese, or Dutch when we will never be accepted by these
people as such.  Why give to a land that will not 
acknowledge our efforts.  Why? Remeber, we are Capeverdeans.
Remember your culture, for it is what makes Capeverdeans.
Remember your language, for it is what makes Capeverdeans.
Remember your land, for it there where they care about you.
Think what you can give to your own land, and contribute.
First and foremost your country needs YOU!!!

Hello to our fellow Cape Verdeans, and especially Mr. Leary
for the wonderful introduction to our heritage on the internet.
We have just returned from a two month tour called JAMIZON,
featuring shades, Keith Sweat, SWV, Brownstone, and 
Mark Morrisson. We performed in 22 major cities & Hawaii. 
However,the highlight of our tour was definately 
the unbelievable performance and love that we received in
New Bedford at the Whaling City Festival in Buttonwood Park.
Thank you all for a greeting we will never forget!!
As you may have read, three of the four members of our
group are proud daughters of Cape Verdean parents. Danielle
Andrews, Monique Peoples, and Shannon Walker Williams. Tiffanie
Cardwell says she is a sister of capeverdeans and she loves
our food!  We come from the islands of Fogo, Brava & Sal. We
have family in New Bedford, Carver, Wareham, Providence
& Boston, which we try to visit as often as possible, 
so we may always be close to our roots and to stay as grounded
as possible in this hectic music industry. We are third 
generation capeverdeans, and we have been taught the richness
and spirituality of our heritage. We are trying to make this

How y'all doing?  It's nice to be back! School has resumed 
and hopefully all the students will resume to this page also

Acabo de viver as melhores fÈrias da minha vida! 
Estive na ILHA DO SAL com tres amigas, Teresa, Susana e Claudia. 
Tudo o que vimos recordamos nas muitas fotografias que fizemos;
Tudo o que sentimos, aquilo que vivemos n“o h· palavras ou imagens 
suficientes que o possam descrever. 
O que vivemos ficou bem gravado nas nossas almas, 
um sentimento tao forte que parece nao ter espaco ca dentro, 
que parece sempre prestes a explodir. 
Essa terra maravilhosa permitiu-nos viver umas ferias bem divertidas,
mas acima de tudo permitiu-nos solidificar a amizade que nos une as quatro, 
relembrar valores que se perdem tao facilmente no correr brutal do dia-a-dia.
Agora ficamos na saudade... 
saudade da terra em si, mas sobretudo das pessoas maravilhosas que conhecemos: 
Vum Vum, Zay, Nicolas, Cristina, Daniel, Portugues, Milu, Walter, Rute, Djassi, 
Cursino, Milena, Nilza e todas as mininas do Funana, Dores e Djo .... 
seria impossivel deixar aqui os nomes de todos, mas todos est“o bem presentes 
nos nossos coracoes. 
E bom saber que existem pessoas como voces  e lugares como Cabo Verde.

Hi,

I have just spend my holiday in Cabo Verde and I must say I really enjoyed it.
It was nice to meet my family that I never met before. All the people
