For your college seniors with graduate school aspirations think big: Big Ten; Big Eight; Southeasstern conference. GO FOR IT. We are descendants of a nation of adventurers. Just think of wherer we all would be if our ancestpors did NOT get on those whaling ships. Think of it this way. YOU have something to offer mainstream America. Go fulfill your mission. Hello,
I just wanted to say I have really enjoyed being able to view
and learn so much about the Country of my paternal grandparents birth.
Growing up with my single parent mother in Connecticut I was not
exposed to my father's culture nearly enough. As I grew older I went
in the military and lost even the little bit that I had. Now as an
adult in California my curiosity and my longing to know about the Cape
Verdean part of me has been an increasing longing. If you know of
anyone else who shares our heritage in Northern CA could you please
let me know. Thank-You Very Much,

I am adopted so I am unsure who my people are...but everyday someone tells me I look Cape Verdean. I hope that I am. Because the more I learn, the more I like the idea.
So this weekend I am going to the festival where I hope to learn a little bit more.

    Peace.

at Shepperds Air Force Base in Wichita Falls Texas for refrigeration &
Air condition. Aaron Amilcar Cabral Matteos Sals Brother stays at Lackland for Special Forces Security Intelligence. To our surprise there was at least 2 or perhaps 3 thousands or more parents who came to Lackland Air Force Base to see their sons or daughters graduate and I can tell you this the Air Force knows how to put on a show. Their motto is AIM HIGH. I am very proud. I will also say this any young person who graduates from high school and is not interested in going to College go to the Air Force. The Air Force is a College and a University you will not regret it. AIM High.
I am Happy to be home. Ok every one take care and one more time .

    Bo gosta de BADJA?
I'm with Peace Corps in Cape Verde until the end of 1999. I've been here two years and am working on establishing a national dance association. We are writing the mission statement right now and will be setting objectives. Anyone interested in building Cape Verdean dance is urged to contact us: Djeca Oliveira of Ra=EDs de Polon is acting president right now. His address is CP421/C, Praia, Cape Verde; telefax number at the rehearsal studio in Praia, Casa Padja, is (238) 613810 and email is cvdance@hotmail.com.
We will probably be looking at raising funds for performances, establishing continuity in training, and improving facilities on all the islands for dancers. I would love to see some kind of collaboration occur between Cape Verdean dancers in the U.S. and those here...

We are very sorry to have offended the sensibilities of, not to mention frightened, Sr. Miguel Mauritti, and we appreciate his gracious and constructive criticism. Regular visitors to the page know that we regularly post photos of the picturesque variety that Mr. Mauritti seems to feel are more representative of Cabo Verde, and we will continue to post them, subject to availability and authorization. We fervently hope and pray that the appropriate departments will assist us in this endeavor by eventually honoring our long-standing requests for pictorial material.
Admittedly, we perhaps left the photo in question of the soccer players up too long. However, beauty/symbolism is in the eye/mind of the beholder, and while the technical and compositional quality of the photo (whose head is that in the foreground???) is not on the level of those regularly found in such glossy publications as Fragata, we'd wager that the majority of our Capeverdean visitors were not at all displeased with it. We stand to be corrected, and welcome further feedback on this issue.
This web site reaches people all over the world. It provides a marvelous and, as yet, severely underexploited opportunity to showcase photographic and artistic works pertaining to Cabo Verde. We encourage artists and photographers to contact us, and to use this medium to gain exposure and recognition, while at the same time helping us to do justice the beauty and reality of Cabo Verde and the Capeverdean people. Rest assured, Sr. Mauritti, we are fully aware that there are "Muitas outras coisas" about Cabo Verde.
(For those interested, the picture of the Assomada/Praia soccer players was taken by yours truly on a visit to the island of Santiago, Cabo Verde in 1995. I had driven up from Praia to the city of Assomada with Ronnie Barboza and his father and brother Kenny, the late Joli Gonsalves, and some others. After visiting the marketplaces, I wandered off by myself, exploring the city, eventually arriving at a small stadium - the Assomada Forum - where some youth were hanging out. Emboldened by my 15-words-and-growing Criolu vocabulary, my immense non-verbal communications skills, and my readiness to school anyone, anywhere, anytime in hoopage regardless of race, color, creed, height, or linguistic barriers, I ventured on into the Forum. Unfortunately, no bball was being played that day, but I started talking with folks, took some pictures, including the one of the soccer game which ensued shortly after I arrived, made some friends, got invited to a party (which I was most unfortunately unable to attend), and just had a great time.)

Year 2000 Census of the U.S. -- Questionnaire on THREATENED DATA Items
The following questionnaire is being circulated on behalf of the Association
of Public Data Users (APDU), of which ICPSR is a member. As described below,
a number of items traditionally appearing on the U.S. decennial censuses are
in danger of being dropped as "not needed" for certain legislative purposes.
Many of them are very valuable to academic researchers and persons working in
local & state governments, however. Support for their retention is therefore
needed. Please print out the following questionnaire, complete it, and
send your filled-out questionnaire to APDU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. (The address
to which completed questionnaires should be sent is given at the end of the
    survey form.)
    Thanks for your assistance!!
APDU Year 2000 Census Content Working Group
    Census Data Use Description Form
The APDU Year 2000 Census Content Working Group is compiling:
    1. Examples of how specific decennial census data items are used.
    2. Legislative/regulatory/program mandates that are the basis for such use.
After a federal review process, the following items have been identified
as not required by legislative or regulatory mandate. As such,
they are at serious risk of being dropped from the 2000 census.
    Population Housing
    ****************************************************************************
    ANCESTRY(!) $Value of...single family homes
Residence 5 years ago (migration item) Year householder moved in
Children ever born (fertility item) Condominium status
Year last worked and important questions:
EMPLOYMENT last year (number of hrs, wks) TELEPHONE, WATER & sewer items
    ***************************************************************************
... proposed that may not make it onto the year 2000 questionnaire:
HEALTH INSURANCE coverage & Noncash benefits
    ************************************************
A separate issue with housing data is that many items may move off the
full-count questionnaire to the sample questionnaire, perhaps leaving
only tenure. Do you need them for small area geography?

Your responses, together with others collected nationwide, will be
the basis of an APDU Year 2000 Working Group report to the Census Bureau.

    S. O. S
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STUDIES AND RESEARCH
    OF GUINEA-BISSAU ENDANGERED BY WAR
ENTIRE PAGES OF THE HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY RISK BEING BLANK
The war which flared up in Guinea-Bissau on 7 June 1998, between the Military Junta representing 90 per cent of the armed forces reinforced by veterans of the armed struggle for national liberation, and the remaining 10 per cent supported by troops from Senegal and Guinea-Conakry solicited by the Head of State, has already exacted a heavy toll, even if the precise details still remain unclear. To the unknown number of deaths, can be added some 250,000 displaced persons and refugees, and the enormous material destruction caused by intense bombardment with heavy artillery during 50 days of confrontation.
Among the infrastructures most affected by the destruction is the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisa (INEP), which is the largest and most active research institution in the country. The complex housing INEP is located less than a kilometre from the initial front-line of the hostilities. It has been transformed into an advanced post of the Senegalese troops. The transformation of the complex into an army barrack and the adverse bombardments it consequently attracted have caused immense damages.
Thanks to the cease fire signed on 25 August 1998, a few staff members of INEP were authorized, after enormous difficulties, to visit their place of work. The preliminary balance-sheet can be summarized in one word:
    DISASTER.
All the workrooms were forcibly opened, emptied of their contents and transformed into dormitories for soldiers. All work documents were thrown outside and left exposed to the elements. The stock of dozens of computers containing data bases on all aspect of Guinea-Bissau, compiled carefully and painstakingly during the past fifteen years, has disappeared. The computers left behind have been disemboweled. Sensitive and very rare equipment, such as the only digital cartography table in the country, is thrown outside and left exposed to dust and rain.
The INEP Library, embryo of the National Library and reference centre of all publications in the country as well as for certain United Nations agencies like FAO and UNESCO, is roofless and damaged on the sides. The torrential rains which have fallen on Bissau since the end of June have constantly entered the building. Its three floors - first, ground and basement - have been transformed into pools where thousands of soaked and irrecoverable books and journals float.
The National Archives at INEP are scattered, shredded and exposed to rain and dirt. Hundreds of audio cassettes which record the history of the national liberation struggle, as told by its actors and witnesses, cannot be found. Hundreds of audio cassettes which record the oral history of the different regions of the country have disappeared. Photographs and films from the Audiovisual Archives are found dispersed and lying in the mud outside. In other words, entire pages of the history of Guinea-Bissau risk being irredeemably blank or illegible. This is particularly serious in view of the fact that no general history of Guinea-Bissau has yet been written, and that all recent efforts of the Institute have been geared towards this objective.
To summarize, the damages suffered by INEP have reduced to zero the enormous efforts made since Independence to provide the country with a centre of documentation and research useful to all those interested in Guinea-Bissau.
At the time of writing, INEP continues to be a military camp, in spite of the cease fire. The staff of the Institute is forbidden to engage in work to rehabilitate or save it from further destruction. Relentlessly, the disaster continues. This letter to inform is also an SOS for the largest research institution of Guinea-Bissau which is threatened by extinction.
As soon as INEP ceases to be a military barrack, a more detailed balance-sheet will be made available. It will be followed by our project for reconstruction.
We urge you to forward this SOS message to all friends of INEP that you know, as well as to all institutions and individuals who attach value to intellectual production.
    The Management Council of INEP

I am portugese I think. I'm in history class being asked about my history. My grandfather is from portugal and my grandmother is from cape cod. They are both dead and my family doesn't know much. I'm wondering whats the difference between portugese and cape verdean? When I visit the cape portugese people don't even want to talk to me, my aunt says thats how they are. I'm sorry if I seem dumb but I'd really like to know my history. A lot of people think portugese and cape verdean are one in the same, I don't think so. I think it comes from simply not knowing. One more thing; if cape verdean people come from an island near Africa how did they end up here? By the my last name is only listed in cape cod, there are many fortes there, none in springfield mass or surrounding towns yet it was my grandfathers name.
Thank You, please respond I don't own a computer but I have unlimited access to one.

I visited Sol and Praia in 1992 when crossing the Atlantic with two American friends in their yacht, Solitaire. We were all struck by the friendliness of the Cabo Verdians we met - and we needed plenty of help. It seemed to be the remotest place on Earth - on the edge of the World - but a place I've always wanted to go back too. Thanks.

Just wanted to let you know there is a new Cape Verdean Club in Boston on Friday nights from 9PM until 2AM. It is located at Club Enzo in the Days Inn Boston on 1234 Soldier's Field Road. The back entrance is on Western Ave which is off of Mass Avenue. During the month of September Ladies get in free all night, there is a cash prize for the sharpest dressed lady, there will also be free finger foods. It is $8.00 for Gentlemen before midnight. This is an absolute 21+ event with no exceptions to the rule. Also there are no jeans, sneakers, T-shirts, baseball caps (appropriate dress only). The club is very close and accessible to Dorchester and Roxbury. Take Mass Ave until you get to Central Square. Pass the set of lights after the Foot Locker until you reach the next set of lights. Take a left at this set of lights onto Pleasant Street. Go to the end of Pleasant Street and take a right onto Western Ave. Follow western Ave. for about five minutes and then you will see The Days Inn on the right side across from Caldors, Bed and Bath etc. There is plenty of free parking at the Hotel, the MDC next store and at the park right in front of the hotel. If you would like directions from the Mass Pike or from Storrow Drive which are also very easy call (617) 430-9912 or e-mail me. Tchow! Ben pasa sabi cu nos. Nu ta badja te manxte.
