Hi,Happy Holidays!! I am so excited to find this site. Both my parents were born on the island of Brava and migrated to New Bedford, Mass. I was born in New Bedford and my family moved to Pawtucket, R.I. soon after. I grew up in the Cape Verdean community, but moved to California when I was fifteen. I haven't quite been able to find many Cape Verdeans that speak the language and grew up in the culture. Hello,
I came across this web page searching for my roots.
I'm trying to find information on my grandfather who I
understand came from Brava. I was told his name was
John DeRosa (I'm not sure of the spelling of the last name).
Married at the time he left Cape Verde, he headed for
America with his new bride. They traveled to and settled in
Rhode Island, and changed their last name to Rose. I'm not
sure what year they arrived in the U.S. but it must have been
in the early 1900s. My father, Daniel Rose, was born in
America in 1924 and was one of about 13 children of
John Rose...so my guess is that John Rose and his wife came
to America around 1911. I was told that John Rose moved to
Connecticut and was killed while working in a shipyard.
No one in the family knows when he was born or when he died,
so it makes it tough to try to find info on him.
If any of you Cape Verdeans know the best way for me to try
to track down his genealogical information, please contact me
at the above email address. I thank you, in advance,
for any help you can give me.

Planning a trip in June 1998 to study and collect a fish called Girella zonata. It is the only Atlantic species of Girella. 14 other species of Girella are found in the Pacific. I have had problems on a couple of recent occasions with
email to Cabo Verde. In particular, I have been unable to
respond to M. H. of Sao Filipe who emailed me via
amilcar@mail.cvtelecom.cv The cvtelecom machine gave me
a "user unknown" for that address. If anyone in Cabo Verde

I visited Cabo Verde islands this spring and enjoyed my trip: No rain (nice for tourists, unfortunate for the inhabitants!), clean water, good food, good beer and of course the grogue.People were very nice everywhere we went : withour street maps of course. We will go there again.

I have visited Cape Verde in 1995 with the Cape Verdean Amer-
ican Congress.It is a beautiful Country and the people are
kind and friendly.I attended a welcome party at the home of
the Cape Verdean Ambassador and his lovely wife.We danced
and enjoyed Cape Verdean music.I was given the name of "the
woman who danced like a fish in the sea".I wish to thank all
the people we met for their help and kindness as a first
time visitor.I am American and I have been a volunteer on
the Board of Directors of C.A.C.D.since 1993 and work with
Cape Verdean people in Rhode Island.I am now studying Portu-
guese and hope to return to Cape Verde one day to work with
and help the people there with Social Service Programs.I now
work with The State of Maine in Social Services and have for
19 years.
My best wishes to President Moscarenas and his wife who I
met on their last visit to Rhode Island and Prime Minister
Carlos Viega who I met on my visit there at the Government

My name is steven. I'm trying to locate anybody who might be related to me via Cabo Verde Islands. My grandfather moved to America around 1915 or so. His name was Peter DeSantos. He worked on a boat that went from different ports in the Atlantic Ocean. He has a brother who I believe did the same type of work but he moved here before Peter. His brother helped him to move here and Peter settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1920 he married Theresa Rixner and they had six children. Rosemary, Barbara, Louise, Nadine, Francis and Peter, Jr. I wish I knew granpa's brothers name but I don't. He settled in Boston, got married and had children. Peter DeSantos wanted to die in his home country so he left us to return to Cape Verde (Fago I believe) in maybe 1965. He didn't die right away but remarried and had a son. So I have an uncle in Cape Verde who is younger than me. I would really like to be in touch with anyone who might have information regarding these persons or their relatives. I'm a professiional entertainer and will be singing in Africa in the fall of 1998. I intend to take a trip to the Islands and it would be nice to meet and family members over there. I have come across the sppeech of Ana Maria Cabral's speech on Amilcar Cabral. It is a very inspiring tribute to a fighter for African liberation whose thought and example will always be as an inspiration. Cabral was the most original thinker of the African revolution of all time. I have read his published work and would like to be in touch with anyone who has written or is as interested as I in the lessons Cabral left for us.
