USCGC Campbell - Cape Verde Community Project
"Our final port call was in Praia, Cape Verde. Once again, the primary mission here was training with the Cape Verde Coast Guard. Another big part of this port call was a large community relations project at a local school. As many of you may know, New Bedford has a large Cape Verdean-American population who were drawn to the area by the fishing and whaling industries over a century ago. Prior to our departure, the city provided 75 gallons of paint and painting supplies to be used during the project. A delegation from New Bedford met the ship in Praia and arranged the project with local representatives. 70 crewmembers performed about 500 hours of work over two days completely repainting the five room schoolhouse, cleaning up the schoolyard and repairing the school's furniture."

Paul Pena Web Site - a tribute to Paul Pena, extraordinary musician and human being...the star of an Oscar-nominated film, "Genghis Blues", about his journey to Tuva, made by Roko and Adrian Belic .
"As a young child, Paul soon showed his talent for music. His mother heard him picking out melodies and chords on a baby grand piano that had been found in the town dump and brought home, 'as a toy that a blind child might enjoy.' He developed 'perfect pitch.' Soon Paul was studying the piano, guitar, upright bass, violin and 'a little trumpet.' He played and sang popular jazz and Cape Verdian ballads with his father, a professional jazz musician, and also sang in his school choruses. Paul appeared in a talent show, and while in college, performed in coffeehouses in Worcester."
