"
Forced prostitution is another form of abuse and
exploitation known to fuel the HIV epidemic. Around
30% of 13-19-year-old sex workers (some of whom
were forced into prostitution) in Cambodia are
infected, and even higher rates have been reported
from elsewhere."
"UNAIDS estimates that four million of the infections occurred in 1998, particularly in east Africa and southern
Africa. Some 11.5 million of them people have already died.
"It is estimated that eight out of every 10 women living with HIV are living in Africa.
"Early involvement of girls in unprotected sex with older persons has been singled as the major factor fanning the
spread of HIV. "

"...It now also appears, as I hear from Dr. Hooker,
that some of these same temperate plants have been
discovered by the Rev. R. T. Lowe on the mountains of
the Cape Verde Islands. This extension of the same
temperate forms, almost under the equator, across the
whole continent of Africa and to the mountains of the
Cape Verde Archipelago, is one of the most astonishing
facts ever recorded in the distribution of plants."

On Monday, September 28, Africa: Seeds of Hope (H.R.
4283) passed the House by voice vote. This is a major victory for
hungry people in Africa and it could not have happened without the hard work
of Bread for the World members.
- U.S. Senate
Africa: Seeds of Hope, S.2283, now has 23 cosponsors. We are
still working hard to win passage of the bill in this Congress. The target
adjournment date is still October 9, but it appears likely that Congress will
remain in session several days beyond this date.
--- Please contact your senators immediately and urge them to cosponsor Africa: Seeds of
Hope, S. 2283, and pass it before Congress adjourns.

"... The African political landscape has already changed markedly in the post-cold war and post- one party eras. Africa is no longer perceived as a pariah by the rest of the world. African leaders are ready to do business with America and the rest of the world but on terms that are just and fair, for many believe the world economic order is skewed against them. If President Clinton's historic visit is to herald the dawn of a new renaissance as he put it, then time is ripe for a new and more just world economic order that could ameliorate suffering, particularly in Africa. The current economic regime perpetuates the slave-master relationship and the dependency syndrome, and consigns the world's poor to the garbage heap." - The Times of Zambia (Mar. 24, 1998)

" Girls, and boys as well, can be infected through
sexual abuse by relatives, family friends, teachers
and strangers. Girls and young women in domestic
service, often exploited for their labour, are especially
vulnerable to sexual abuse by males in the
employer's family. Young boys serving as apprentices
in the construction trade or helpers on long-haul
trucks are sometimes abused by the older men.

Africa have been infected with HIV since the epidemic started in the 1980s.

At 15N, there is not enough coriolis force to make a storm spin very much. So, how did it get that way? "The answer is blowin' in the wind." NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center
