Jen Burrows is named new field hockey coach at UMass Dartmouth
(Dartmouth, MA) – A former two-sport athlete at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been hired to take over as the Corsairs’ field hockey coach for the 2005 season. Jennifer Burrows, a 2002 graduate of UMass Dartmouth and two-sport athlete in field hockey and women’s lacrosse, was named the new head field hockey coach by Athletic Director Bob Mullen on Thursday.
As recently as last season, Burrows was an assistant coach for the UMass Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team. Burrows will fill the position left vacant following the retirement of Marilyn Ritz at the end of last season.
“Jen Burrows will bring a renewed sense of enthusiasm and energy to our field hockey program,” said Mullen. “She was an excellent leader as a student-athlete and has already demonstrated that she is a hard-working coach who will make every effort to improve her players and her teams.”
Burrows enjoyed a distinguished athletic career at UMass Dartmouth from 1998 through 2002. The 1998 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Burrows was also an LEC All-Conference, All-Tournament and Outstanding Athletic Achievement winner during the 1999 season. A 2000 Outstanding Athletic Achievement winner for a second year, Burrows was selected as team captain for the Corsiars during her senior season of 2002. Although she had not played women’s lacrosse prior to college, Burrows served as team captain during her senior season in 2002.
“I am looking forward to the challenge of being a new head coach,” said Burrows. “We have a good nucleus of experienced players from last season and quite a few new players to the program. We are going to work very hard as a team to make this season as successful as possible.”
