UMass Dartmouth snaps 33-game losing streak with
1-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University
MANSFIELD, Conn. – UMass Dartmouth freshman Alisha Edwards (MELROSE, MA) came off the bench to score the only goal of the match with five minutes left as the Corsairs snapped a 33-game losing streak with a 1-0 Little East Conference win over field hockey Monday afternoon.
By winning, UMass Dartmouth (1-13, 1-8 little east) prevented Eastern (5-12, 3-5) from clinching a berth in the conference playoffs, which gets underway with three first-round matches Tuesday, Nov. 2.
The win is the first for the Corsairs after 33 straight losses overall and 19 straight regular-season conference setbacks. Until Monday, UMass' last win had come against host Eastern by a score of 2-1 in overtime on October 22, 2002.
Edwards, who had come off the bench late in the first half, scored in a scramble in front of the net on a pass from freshman Erin Langan (TOWNSEND, MA) with 5:22 left. Edwards helped set up her own goal by taking her team's first shot moments earlier. The shot carried across the goal mouth toward the end line. Langan chased the shot down at the end line and centered it into the box to Edwards, who deflected it past Eastern junior goalkeeper Damaly Auguste (STAMFORD).
The goal came while Eastern was playing a defensive player short due to a yellow card issued two minutes and 28 seconds earlier.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Tavares (DARTMOUTH, MA) recorded the Corsairs' first shutout in 51 matches, since a 2-0 win over Salem State College Sept. 22, 2001. Tavares needed to save one of Eastern's six shots.
