TEN-RUN 7TH CARRIES UMASS TO OPENING LEC WIN
Corsairs erupt after two out and
no one on in 18-9 win over Western Conn.
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- The fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team scored ten runs on seven hits against four different pitchers after there were two out in the top of the seventh inning and went on to a 18-9 win over third-seeded Western Connecticut State University Wednesday night in an opening game in the 2004 Little East Conference Tournament at the ECSU Baseball Stadium.
A winner of four straight, UMass Dartmouth (24-13) advances in the winners' bracket of the six-team, double-elimination tournament and will play Thursday night against second-seeded University of Southern Maine, which came from behind to defeat fifth-seeded Rhode Island College 7-6 earlier Wednesday. On Thursday at 3:30 p.m., Western Connecticut (21-17) faces top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, which downed Keene State College 19-2 in Wednesday's first game.
With Western leading 9-5, ten straight UMass batters reached safely and scored in the seventh inning after there were two out and no one on base. Clean-up hitter Geoff Nettleton (MARLBORO, MA) hit a two-run home run -- one of two that he hit in the game -- to account for the first two runs of the inning and No. 3 hitter Ryan Sullivan (CHICOPEE, MA) drove in the final two runs of the inning with his third home run. No. 9 hitter John Macone (STONEHAM, MA) and leadoff hitter Robert DelDuca ( METHUEN, MA) also plated two runs each in the inning with a single and double, respectively.
The Colonials had built a 9-5 lead afer five innings, knocking out UMass starter Dan DeCosta (SOMERSET, MA) in a three-run first inning and chasing reliever Frank Cronin (ROCKLAND, MA) in a two-run fifth.D.J. Mulhall (STRATFORD), Justin McCulloch (WATERBURY) and Eben McKnight (WINDSOR) all drove in runs with hits in the first, McKnight adding another RBI hit in the second and Joshua Coleman (TERRYVILLE) a two-run double in the second. Western had four doubles in its first two at-bats.
