UMASS DARTMOUTH BASEBALL TEAM RALLIES TO DEFEAT BECKER

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s baseball team rallied to score twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Becker, 4-3, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore left fielder Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) started the ninth-inning rally with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Mike Maclean (Spencer. MA/David Prouty HS). Junior designated hitter Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) doubled home Zygmont to tie the score, then moved to third when junior left fielder Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) grounded out. Freshman second baseman Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) lofted a fly ball to left field, but Becker left fielder George Triantanfillakos dropped it, allowing Mahoney to score the winning run.

The Corsairs had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) walked and moved to second on Zygmont’s one-out single. Maclean’s RBI single made it 1-0. Mahoney followed with a single to score Zygmont and give the Corsairs a 2-0 lead.

Becker took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. After a walk to Triantanfillakos, Keith Renaud was hit by a pitch and Kevin Renaud singled to load the bases. Devin Caron squeezed home a run with a sacrifice bunt, and Joe DeLuca doubled home two more runs to make it 3-2.

Freshman Matt Kurth (Chilmark, MA/Martha’s Vineyard HS), the third Corsair pitcher, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory and improve to 1-0. Joe Petracone, the second pitcher for Becker, took the loss and fell to 0-1.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-6 with the victory, while Becker fell to 5-7 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Wednesday.
