UMASS DARTMOUTH BASEBALL TEAM TAKES OPENER
LOS ANGELES, CA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team got their season off to a winning start.
The Corsairs jumped out to a 7-1 lead and defeated Occidental, 10-6, at the Tigers’ Anderson Field Friday.
Four Corsairs combined to account for eight of their 10 runs. Senior co-captain Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS), UMass Dartmouth’s first baseman, had a home run and drove in four runs. Junior outfielder Evan Britto (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS/Bridgewater State) added a double and triple and two runs batted in, while freshman third baseman Dave McGuire ((Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS) also drove in a pair of runs.
Sophomore right-hander Rob Gleavy (Braintree, MA/Archbishop Williams HS) earned the victory by pitching the first six innings. Senior right-hander Eric Griswold (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) pitched the final three innings and earned the save.
“I’m pleased,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. “We didn’t make an error, and we had six freshmen in the field. It went well.”
The Corsairs improved to 1-0, while Occidental fell to 6-14. UMass Dartmouth will continue their spring trip when they visit Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
