UMASS DARTMOUTH BASEBALL TEAM FALLS TO WESLEYAN
CLAREMONT, CA-Wesleyan scored seven runs in their final three at-bats to break the game open and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s baseball team, 16-10, in the final game of the Corsairs’ spring trip at Arce Stadium at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday afternoon.
Chris Simpson hit a three-run home in the top of the seventh and Kopiec added a two-run shot as the Cardinals opened up a 14-8 advantage and never looked back.
The Corsairs took a 3-0 first inning lead, and then scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut WC’s lead to 9-8. They scored twice more in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final score.
Freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) hit a two-run homer in the first inning for UMass Dartmouth, freshman second baseman Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) doubled in two runs in the fifth, and sophomore left fielder Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) singled in a run in the first inning and hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Freshman center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA/Hull HS) singled home a run in the ninth, while the other scored on a wild pitch.
Wesleyan starter Eric Wdowiak earned the victory, allowing eight runs in 5 2/3 innings, while Jonathan Sargent relieved in the sixth and finished the game to earn a save. Senior right-hander Jason Thompson (West Bridgewater, MA/Plymouth North HS), the second of three Corsair pitchers, took the loss.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 2-5 with the defeat, while Wesleyan improved to 5-5.The Corsairs will return to New England and visit Springfield College Sunday.
