WHITTIER, CA-Whittier scored five unearned runs in a six-run second inning and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team, 15-3, in a game that ended late Wednesday evening at Memorial Field.
Senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) had three hits for the Corsairs, including an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) drove in a run with a single in the first inning and another with a bases-loaded walk in the third.
Designated hitter Matt Morgado drove in three runs for the Poets, capping the second inning with a two-run homer. Catcher Robert Pachuca had four hits and scored three times, and right fielder Aaron Sheehey had two hits, including a two-run home run.
Sophomore right-hander Rob Gleavy (Braintree, MA/Archbishop Williams HS), the first of four UMD pitchers, took the loss, falling to 1-1. Matt Schwarz allowed one run in seven innings to earn the win for Whittier, improving to 3-2.
The Corsairs fell to 1-4 with the defeat, while Whittier improved to 10-11-1. UMass Dartmouth will conclude their California trip with a pair of games against Wesleyan.
