UMASS DARTMOUTH BASEBALL TEAM FALLS AT WHITTIER
WHITTIER, CA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team dropped their second game in a row on their California trip Sunday.
Whittier overcame 4-0 and 5-2 UMD leads, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh to defeat the Corsairs, 16-6, at Memorial Field Sunday.
Freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) led the Corsair hitting attack with a two-run double in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the third. Freshman third baseman Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS) and freshman center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA/Hull HS) drove in the other runs for the Corsairs, with Smolinsky adding two hits. Sophomore outfielder Dylan Zygmont’s (Swansea, MA/Case HS) ninth-inning sacrifice fly accounted for the other UMass Dartmouth run.
Riley Bateman had four hits for Whittier, while Pete Aiello drove in three runs.
Sophomore Brian Vanasse (Sterling, MA/Wachusett HS), the Corsairs’ starting pitcher, took the loss and dropped to 0-1. Justin Armijo earned the win for the Poets and improved to 3-1.
“We got the lead, but we didn’t get the pitching,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. “The game just got away from us.”
The Corsairs fell to 1-2 with the defeat, while WC improved to 9-11-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Chapman Tuesday evening.
