All-Girl Division II
|
The Corsairs competed for the All-Girl Division II Finals on Saturday, April 3, 1999 at the Daytona Beach Bandshell. The competition was upposed to start at 8:00AM, with the Corsairs performing fourth. However, there was a 30 minute delay and the team waited in anticipation to perform. The nervous tension grew until 8:45AM when it was time for UMD to take the mat. UMass had to follow Camden County Community College, Eastern Oklahoma State College, and Riverside Community College. Camden County Community College struggled with their routine and received a 5.75. Eastern Oklahoma State College impressed the judges with their routine, who rewarded them with a 7.73. Riverside Community College performed next and duplicated the feat, edging out Eastern Oklahoma State College by 0.01. UMD had a tough task ahead of them. These were high scores to top. However, the Corsairs had something that the judges liked that the other squads lacked - a clean and sharp routine. And for that, UMass Dartmouth was rewarded with a score of 8.01. This put UMD in the lead with Framingham State College yet to perform. Framingham State College had an energetic routine with lots of difficulty, but there was a major bobble. This made for a close competition. UMass waited in anticipation, hoping for a Framingham score lower than 8.01. They huddled around and held hands as the announcer prepared to read of the score. "And the score for Framingham State College..." as the tension grew, "seven point..." The UMass Dartmouth cheerleaders didn't wait to listen to the rest of the score. Celebration began in the form of jumping, screaming, hugging, and crying. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth had just won the 1999 NCA College National All-Girl Division II Championships. The All-Girl Division I schools competed next, and UMD's score topped all the scores from this division. If NCA had kept the All-Girl Division as one division, UMass Dartmouth would have won since it had the highest score of all the All-Girl squads.
