In 12 seasons as the head men's tennis coach at UMass Dartmouth, Coach Warren Preti
has compiled an impressive record of 94-31-1 including a string of five consecutive
Little East Conference mens tennis championships dating back to 1996. Prior to
the 1999 season, Preti had also served as the Corsairs' women's team coach, capturing
three consecutive LEC women's championships since 1996. Combining the two teams
he's coached, Preti has captured eight consecutive LEC tennis championships.
A former college standout tennis player from 1964 through 1968 at Bridgewater State
College, Preti has turned UMass Dartmouth's mens tennis program into one of the
most successful programs in New England. During the last five seasons in which UMass
Dartmouth has successfully defended its LEC mens championship four times, Preti's
teams have compiled an overall record of 49-5 in dual matches. UMass Dartmouths
mens players have captured 25 of 30 LEC singles championships and 10 of the 15 LEC
doubles championships during that five- year period.
Preti has also coached the top singles player in the LEC in five of the last six
seasons. Since 1995, the #1 singles champion in the LEC has been a UMass Dartmouth
Corsair. The list of #1 singles LEC title holders includes Felipe Miguel in 1995,
David Kreiss in 1996, a two-time #1 singles champion in 1997 and 1998, John Guilfoy,
and Mark Lempart in 1999.
UMass Dartmouth posted a 7-4 record in the 2000 season. Two years ago, the Corsairs
had a perfect 11-0 record in dual matches during the 1998 season. The undefeated
team was UMass Dartmouth's first undefeated team in mens tennis since the Corsairs
went 8-0 back in 1972.
Preti had been almost as successful with the UMass Dartmouth women's tennis program
as well. During his years with the womens team, UMass Dartmouth compiled a record
of 71-53, including three consecutive Little East Conference championships dating
back to 1996. During those three years, Preti's Corsairs have earned 30 wins against
only eight losses and one tie. In the three consecutive LEC championships, UMass
Dartmouth women captured 12 of 18 singles titles and seven of nine doubles championships.
Preti is joined by assistant coach Pat Riccardi, who has been with UMass Dartmouth
tennis for nine seasons. Riccardi is an accomplished singles and doubles player
in NELTA circles. Riccardi works with the players on stroke mechanics and production
while Preti stresses conditioning and the mental aspects of the game.
